WikTree Sourcer appears to be creating the links to obits incorrectly. I have found a half dozen broken links today, all seeming to stem from the Obituary Collection record page on Ancestry.
Could you provide an example record so I can take a look?

Sorry, I lost track of this request. Here is one example.

This is the source generated by the app from the Ancestry Record. I have more examples if you need them, but they all follow the same pattern. The correct link should be https://lancasteronline.com/obituaries/brenda-c-ceily-fangmeyer/article_1e0561f9-52be-5f7f-aeb2-d7473426d80e.html

Hey Rob,

Wanted to let you know that AGC seems to be converting FSFTID tags into broken links. Here's an example I just did the version in WBE v16.3. https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Bachtell-19&diff=195778739&oldid=8058134

Though perhaps something utilizing Template:FamilySearch would be more future proof.

That specific error message implies that the extension is not working. It is possible that you have not granted it the permissions it needs. Which browser are you using and on what device?

When the extension is working it does not work on the sources page - it works on the details page. e.g. https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/235P-QRT

It may not be the permissions if it looks like it has access to FamilySearch in your dialog.

It could be that my extension code is crashing on your machine/browser. To check that could you do this...

In Chrome menus do View -> Developer -> JavaScript console In the same tab/window go to the FamilySearch page you want to do "Save Person Data" on. Click on the [1] icon to bring up the Sourcer menu See if any error messages show up in the Javascript console

I did not even get to opening (1) and wonder if there is a conflict of the "X" still in cache that FS expects to be there? I don't believe we have space for screen shots here? I have already remove WT X from my extensions...

Once I opened (1) went to Save citation which just loaded to my clipboard and I pasted onto profile.

From the FS detail page the Save and then on WT profile merge from ext data worked. Though it did not bring the other sources from FS to WT. Since I don't see it in the WikiTree Sourcer User Guide; perhaps, this ap does not transfer multiple records as "Facts" or something similar? Something new always has a learning curve... I need to open each record individually and then can have nicer citation or just C+P each citation as written from the collection of sources?

It sounds like it is working for you on the details page. Glad to hear that.

Some of those errors messages (even ones about manifest.json) or normal on FamilySearch even when no WikiTree extensions are installed.

You are correct that Sourcer does not currently add any lines to the bio for facts or sources from a FS profile page. My current thinking is that one gets a better result by using Sourcer to generate a narrative and citation for each source. At some point I might see if I can do as good a job (or close) automatically at the time "Save Person Data" is done. Personally I like to review the sources as I add them and touch up the narrative lines and I feel I would probably end up not doing that so much if it was fully automated. I guess we all work differently. I really don't like typing in stuff that is already online somewhere but I'm happy to do some reviewing and mouse clicking :)

Rob: Fantastic! Just found your 'Sourcer' & watched Video. I started old-school (micro-fiche, pencil & notebook, etc.) over 50 years ago, but this looks great. Does one need paid subscriptions to access the source-sites currently offered? I'd love to try it, if 'fee-free'. Am using W10 desktop with Firefox, so hope this old dog can learn (your) new tricks. Thank you for your creativity so generously provided.

Hi Phil, Sourcer current works with 9 external sites. Of these the only 2 that need a paid subscription (to search and view records) are Ancestry and FindMyPast. Ancestry does have a library subscription and Sourcer will work with that.

When someone with an Ancestry subscription creates a citation using Sourcer and there is an image on Ancestry then Sourcer will include the "Ancestry Sharing Link" in the citation. This allows people without an Ancestry subscription to view the image.

Halfway through cleaning I realised I hadn't looked at my own suggestions report. Have you cleared out your own suggestions? I can see some of your profiles on the father/ mother status not set suggestion so I think that's some easy stat wins there!

Best, David

I am researching the history of Dinder which was one of the Rodney estates because I used to live there and I have lived in several places with Rodney links. Does anyone have any information about the 13th or 14th century Rodneys?

Hi Richard, I researched George Rodney (abt.1508-1586) for the England Project Orphan Trail. I mentioned Dinder as part of that using this source: https://www.google.com/books/edition/The_History_and_Antiquities_of_Somersets/1Qg-AQAAMAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&bsq=Dinder%20Rodney

I haven't researched the Rodneys further back though.

I would check Somerset Wills for several spellings of Rodney/Rodeney etc: https://archive.org/details/somersetpub16someuoft/page/82/mode/2up?view=theater&q=Rodeney

Rob, I'm finding on AGC that lines for ::Source and :::Page are getting separated so we wind up with a whole paragraph of just page numbers divorced from their sources. I can give a demo or suggest a profile.

Hi Rob,

It's that time of the year again: check-in time! As England Project Leaders, we like to check in with you every six months or so to see how things are progressing. Back in May, we didn't ask for a response due to the rapid emergence of Covid-19 because we understood that people's lives were changing rapidly. While we are still living in a Covid world, we do need to hear back from you this time around

First of all, how are you doing? What are you currently working on? Are you happy with the team(s) you're in, or would you like to change things up?

Secondly, we're looking for some feedback on the Google Group and our Discord server. Do you use either or both of these? If you don't use either, why not? Do you have any suggestions on how we can improve participation and collaboration, either generally or for you personally?

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Lizzie, Amy, Joan

England Project Leaders

Hi Lizzie (and Amy and Joan),

What I'm currently/recently working on:

  • I am currently working on OT2 with Jo as my trailblazer.
  • I am part of the Devon team but haven't really done anything related to that team.
  • I am planning to join the Managed Profiles team at some point at Jo's suggestion.
  • I have been working on my early Pavey ancestors in Yarcombe, Devon.
  • I have also developed a Chrome Extension for cleaning up GEDCOM profiles (since I started off importing from my Ancestry tree)

I use the Discord server regularly. It seems to work quite well, although the channels could perhaps be organized better. When I was working on my Chrome Extension (WikiTree AGC) I wasn't sure how to let people on the England project know about it.

I am subscribed to the Google group but don't really use it.

I really appreciate the focus of the England Project and the OT.

Cheers, Rob

Hi Rob,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz and joining the England project!

Pre-1700 ancestors can be shared by many descendants, so collaboration is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find all the projects if your interested in joining another project.

Have questions? Ask in the comments section of my profile.

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles you manage, or edit. (See:https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Pre-1700_Profiles#Cite_reliable_sources).

P.S. To find reliable sources for your profiles, go to the Family Tree & Tools tab; select Genealogy Research and scroll down near the bottom of that list and select Research with RootsSearch. There are over 20 websites to access from there.

Hi Cheryl,

I have joined the England team and I am enjoying following their Orphan Trail to get up to speed. I will probably get back to my tree and importing my GEDCOM tree after that.

Cheers, Rob

Hi Rob!

Thank you for adding your DNA Test to your profile on WikiTree. Getting Started with DNA will tell you more about how DNA kits are used on WikiTree.

DNA at WikiTree provides a visual way for you to find others who have tested and have the potential of having common ancestors. It normally takes 24 hours from adding a test, or adding a new ancestor, or ancestor’s descendant, for WikiTree to display your name and test results on your ancestors and their descendants’ profiles for potential cousins to compare results with.

Have fun!

Hi Rob,

One of our mentors created a tutorial for the GEDCOMpare process that I found very helpful. I hope that you will too.

If you have any questions about how WikiTree works, let us know by using the "reply" link under our comments or by clicking our names to visit our profiles. From there you can leave a comment or send a private message.

Thanks for your note, Rob, and I'm glad it was useful.

Please do let me know if you have any questions about how WikiTree works, even if they seem minor. My rule of thumb when I started was to search for an answer for five minutes, then reach out to my Greeters, and then resume searching. I might have found the answer before they got back with me but they sometimes offered a different way of doing the same thing which was easier. We are always here to help.

See you in the branches,

Debi ~ WikiTree Greeter

PS We have a research tool that makes finding reliable sources easier. I use it all the time and it helps me remember different places to check. To give it a try, go to the Family Tree & Tools tab; select Genealogy Research, scroll down near the bottom of that list, and select Research with RootsSearch (use your WikiTree email & password). There are over 20 websites to access from there. You can read more about the tool in the RootsSearch FAQ.

Thank you for signing the Honor Code, Rob.

I see that you have had your DNA tested, congratulations! Getting Started with DNA will tell you more about how DNA kits are used on WikiTree.

DNA at WikiTree provides a visual way for you to find others who have tested and have the potential of having common ancestors. To get the best results, you need to continue adding sourced profiles for your ancestors until you can connect to existing profiles in WikiTree. If you have exhausted what you know on one line, try a different one. 24 hours after you connect to an existing profile, your test will have populated on the profiles of your ancestors and their descendants, where others with potential matches may also appear.

Let me know if you have any questions, and have fun!
