Harry was born on 18 July 1852 in Plymouth, Devon, England. His parents were William Henry Pavey and Elizabeth (Ellacott) Pavey. Harry was the 12th and final child of the couple.[1]
Harry was baptised on 23 March 1855 in Plymouth St Andrew. He was baptised at the same time as his four closest older siblings. It appears that his parents had their 5 youngest children baptised shortly before they moved to London. The family was living on Athenaeum Street at the time of the baptism.[2]
In the 1861 census Harry was living at 16 Queen's Crescent, Kentish Town, St Pancras, Middlesex with his father and older siblings Charles and Fanny. His mother was staying with their daughter Marianne (who had just given birth) and her family.[3][4]

In the 1871 census Harry was living at 65 Prince of Wales Rd, St Pancras, London with his wife and one month old son. They were living in the same house as his parents but considered a separate household. Harry was a blind maker like his father.[7][8]

Gravestone of William Henry Pavey and family |
There is a newspaper article about a comic singer called Harry Pavey in 1898. This is probably a different Harry Pavey but some of his family were musical so it is possible. The address in the notice is "59 Alderney St, Pimlico, SW" which does not seem a match.[24]
