Augusta was born in 1858 in Bussow, Brandenburg, Germany. Her parents were Carl Streich and Marie Cargus. She immigrated to Canada in 1861 aboard the ship "Washington" which sailed from Hamburg to Quebec. Her father was one of the pioneer farmers of McNab Township in Renfrew County, Ontario. In addition to her sister Mary, born in Germany, Augusta had two siblings born in Canada, William and Tena. My mother thought there was another child, Henry, but searching the records revealed Henry was the son of a teenage Augusta, who didn't marry the father. She later married Albert Loock and had children with him. Little Henry lived with his grandfather, then his stepfather, then his Uncle William Streich until he was old enough to be on his own. He kept his mother's maiden name but spelled it as it was pronounced, Henry Strike. Sadly, Augusta contracted Typhoid Fever and passed away in 1907.

The name Streich was a problem for the family when they emigrated from Germany to Ontario. English people were calling them "stretch", "streech" and "stach", when the name was pronounced more like "strike." Many family members started spelling the name Strike. Others kept the original spelling. Memory of my mother, granddaughter of Augusta Streich.
