Biography

Marie Cargus was born in 1831 to unknown parents. The family name was changed to Karyus in North America, but I have just located some Kargus families in Renfrew County, yet another option for the spelling of this surname. Marie married Carl Streich in Bussow, Germany around 1856 and was usually known as Maria or Mary Streich. She emigrated with Carl and their first two children born in Germany, in April 1861. Also emigrating on the same ship "Washington" was Maria's older sister Johanne Cargus who had married Christian Fredrich Scheel and had eight children. The families were close and lived near each other in their new home in McNab Township, Renfrew County, Ontario. A third child, William, was born soon after their arrival. Another child, Ernestine "Tena" was born in 1872. After Carl, a farmer, died in 1889, Maria lived with her son William. In the 1901 Census she is listed twice, first living with her son William, then later moving to her son-in-law's house, Albert Loock, who had married her daughter, Augusta. A Find A Grave listing gives her name as Mary C. Karyus and a death date of Oct 10, 1908 but the actual gravestone has Oct 11, 1908.

UNBLOCKED BIRTH NAME: Maria Streich's birth name was a several- year problem. Her daughter Augusta Caroline's marriage record listed Roivus as the name. Her daughter Ernestine's marriage record listed Okarns. My mother thought it was Ristow. Usually she was Mrs. Charlie Streich or Maria Streich. With no birth record in Germany, no marriage record and no death record found, it was a BLOCK. Happily, Wayne Ziebarth, searching for his 2nd great grandmother's birth name, found Maria Streich was MARIE CARGUS, on the Brandenburg, Prussia Emigration Records located on Ancestry. Terrific job, Wayne!

Arnprior & McNab/Braeside Archives. Registrations of Death for the Town of Arnprior between 1908-1928. The deaths were registered in Arnprior but occurred outside of the town. 1908 March - November , 32 Registrations in the Index. KARGUS, MARY 1908 77 Unfortunately, I haven't been able to see the original document but it does look like this is the death record. Age 77 is close enough for early records where a family member or minister could be giving the information.
