Who are the Super Aussie Genies?
Super Aussie Genies. |
We are a team that focuses mostly on Australian research, initially set up by members of the Society of Australian Genealogists. Our team started in 2023 and we work closely with the Australia Project and the other two Australian challenge teams, Wizards of Aus and Southern Cross Stars.
We contribute to Wikitree year round and have a channel for live chat on Discord. We have participated in Challenges and thons since January 2023 and hope to participate in many more. We welcome other Wikitreers to join us during challenges, even if you are not a SAG member.
Many of us are part of the very friendly Wikitree in Australia Facebook Group, SAG Discussion Facebook Group and/or the Australia Project team. You can also talk to us during 'Thons' on the Wikitree Discord Server.
If you are a SAG member, are you on our Society's Members Page? Add the category to your profile now!
To keep updated add the 'Australia' and 'SAG' tags to your profile (one or both is fine!).
Connect-a-Thon April 2024

How do I participate in the Connect-a-Thon?
Simply post acomment in the G2G sign-up thread. Find the answer that says you wish to join the Super Aussie Genies (currently on page 2 and comment that you wish to join our team!
A WikiTree Leader will be along shortly to assign you a racing bib with your unique number. There will be lucky door prize draws throughout the weekend - if your bib number is drawn you'll have until the next draw to claim your prize.
When does the Connect-a-Thon begin and end?
The official Thon event starts Friday, April 12, at 8 AM EDT (12pm UTC) and runs until Monday, April 15, at 8 AM EDT (12pm UTC).
Start and End Times
Australia has multiple time zones, complicated by 5 states also having daylight saving time (usually starting in October and ending in April).
In Australia, this works out to:
Start time: Friday, 12 April (check DLS changes!)
- 10pm on the east coast (QLD, NSW, VIC, and TAS)
- 9.30pm SA, NT
- 8pm in the west (WA)
End time: Monday, 15 April (check DLS changes!)
- 10pm NSW, ACT, Victoria, Tassie, QLD
- 9.30pm SA, NT
- 8pm WA
i.e. someone in Brisbane can start adding profiles after 10pm Friday and should stop before 10pm Monday.
Please advise Veronica or Danielle if you see an error in the times here - I'm consistently bad at time conversion!

Connect-a-thon is a challenge event that encourages us to improve the tree by adding missing people.
Unlike other mini challenges, it doesn't matter if you don't manage to attach an 'unconnected' person to the main branches of the shared tree, and you don't have to work on only people who aren't connected yet. The focus is on adding missing people and relationships to the tree as that will improve everyone's family connections.
During Connect-a-thon, we get a point every time a team member adds a new person to an existing profile in WikiTree.
Examples:
- creating a new profile for a child of existing parents
- adding a new parent for an existing child
- adding the spouse for someone you just created
You don't get a point for:
- adding someone who isn't connected to anyone, i.e. by going through 'Add > New Person', (but you do get points when you add family members to them); or
- linking existing people together (but please still do that if you find them!).
If you want to go back and do more work on these people after the challenge, consider adding a Personal Category to each one - this will keep a dynamic list of them.
Remember, any new profiles created must have at least one good source included.
Chat
- If you want to chat via G2G during the thon - answer this post.
- Or come and chat live on the Super Aussie Genies Channel at Discord.
Get help
- Official Connect-a-thon help page
- If you are new to Discord, when you ask to be verified on the Wikitree server, also request that you would like to be added to the Super Aussie Genie Channel. If you have problems contact Veronica.
- There are some excellent citation generators on the Australia Project Resources page which can help speed up your work.
What can I work on?
- Your own extended family members - if you aren't sure who's missing:
- - Choose an ancestor and click on the Descendants button. Look through them to find obvious gaps i.e. people with missing spouses or missing children.
- - Look through "My Connections" to see who is missing from your extended cousins' familes - each degree is one step from you. e.g. 1st degree is your own siblings, spouse, and parents, 2nd is your grandparents, sibling's spouse, etc.
- - Add known ancestors to your tree - the Brick Walls app can show your current ancestors who don't have parents yet.
- Work through profiles who need family members added, usually already sourced in the biography. These profiles are listed on various category pages:
- - SAG, Needs Profiles Created. These have been identified as profiles of interest to SAG.
- - Australia, Needs Profiles Created. These have been identified as profiles relating to Australia.
- TIP - If you click on the My Connections button at the top right of the page you can check which are the most closely connected to you, or use the links to see profiles from your state.
- Work through people identified as needing to be connected to the main tree. The profiles are listed on various category pages:
- - SAG, Needs Connection. These have been identified as profiles of interest to SAG.
- - Unconnected First Fleeters. These have been identified as profiles of interest to the Australia Project.
- - Australia Project Challenges
- Any other people you like, as long as you can find sources for them.
Other 'Thons'
A variety of 'thons' are held throughout the year to help improve Wikitree, sometimes including:
- Source-a-Thon: The Source-a-Thon is an annual 72-hour marathon race to find sources for as many of WikiTree's "Unsourced" profiles as we can! See: The official Source-a-Thon page
- Clean-a-Thon: There are thousands of database errors in WikiTree profiles. The focus of the Clean-a-Thon is to fix as many of them as we possibly can!
- Scan-a-Thon: The Scan-a-Thon is an excuse to finally scan and upload those photos and original documents you have.
We will add more detail about these when the next 'thon' is announced!
