Biography

Birth and Baptism

Maestro Emmanuele Soldano is born and baptized 11 October 1819 in Corleone, the son of Maestro Giuseppe Soldano and Giuseppa Maniscalco, Corleone native residents. Emmanuele is named after his maternal grandfather. His godparents are Vincenzo Governali and Caterina Soldano, who are not a married couple.

Childhood

His sister Antonina, age two, and then his father, Maestro Giuseppe, age 45, die, one the day after the next, in August 1829, during the second cholera pandemic.

In 1834, Emmanuele, 14 (b. 1819), lives with his widowed mother Donna Giuseppa, and his siblings Lucia, 17 (b. 1817), Liboria, 10 (b. 1823), and Rosa, 8 (b. 1825), on the Rua del Piano.

Adulthood

Emmanuele is a calzolajo, a shoemaker by profession. He marries Maria Grazia Cinquemani on 21 January 1844. His parents have both died by this time.

Births of His Children

Emmanuele and Maria Grazia have at least nine children: Giuseppa (1844), Giuseppe (1846), Paolo (1849), Maria Carmela (1851), Vincenzo (1856), Francesco (1859), Salvatore (c. 1864), Carmelo (1867), and Carmela (c. 1870).

Giuseppa is born 12 November 1844 in her parents' home in the via del Collegio, Corleone. She is baptized the same day, named after Emmanuele's mother, as is traditional for the first born daughter. Her godparents are Leoluca Paparcuri and Paola Liggio, a married couple.

Giuseppe is born and baptized 21 December 1846, named after Emmanuele's father, as is traditional. His godparents are Rafaele di Martino (who is married to Lucia Soldano) and his maternal grandmother Birgitta L'Ala, wife of the late Paolo Cinquemani.

Paolo is born 23 May 1849 in his parents' home in Costello inferiore, Corleone. He is baptized the same day, named after his maternal grandfather. His godparents are Seraphinus lo Curto and Francisca Paula Gagliardo. Paolo is my direct ancestor through his daughter, Lucy Soldano, who immigrates to New York with her mother and siblings.

Maria Carmela is born and baptized on 29 November 1851. Her godparents are Vincenzo Provenzano and Apollonia Liggio, a married couple.

Vincenzo is born 31 July 1856 in via Favaretta, Corleone. Vincenzo is baptized the same day. His godparents are Franciscus Colletti and Liboria Zangaro.

Francesco is born and baptized on 5 March 1859. His godparents are Salvator Birrittella and Josepha Orlando.

Maria Carmela dies at age 10 (b. 1852) on 19 May 1862.

Based on his age at the time of his death, Salvatore is born around 1864.

Carmelo is born 10 June 1867 and baptized the following day. His godparents are Joseph and Josepha Soldano, his brother and sister.

Carmela's birth date is not known. She marries in New York in 1900. I have estimated she is born a few years before her mother's known death.

Maria Grazia dies at age 50 (b. 1824) on 6 June 1874. Emmanuele survives her.

The surviving Giuseppe (c. 1856) marries Biagia di Gregorio on 25 April 1876.

Vincenzo marries Barbara Tufanio in Corleone on 6 July 1879.

Giuseppa marries twice, first to Giuseppe Paparcuri, a brickmason, who dies on 17 July 1883 in the Bagno hospital in Alghero. The following year, Giuseppa marries the widower Giuseppe Fiducia. Emmanuele is still living, but his wife has passed away.

Salvatore is known only from his death record of May 1885. He is a carpenter and dies at age 21 at 1 Via Rue Del Piano, Corleone.

Emmanuele dies at 68 years of age (actually 67 years and 10 months) on 13 August 1887.

Carmela marries Giuseppe Cascio in New York on 11 February 1900.
