Mary Jane Smith was born about 1834-35 in Sidney Township, Upper Canada, now Ontario. She married a widower, William Clazie, in 1864 at Shannonville, Ontario. The marriage record said her parents were Thomas Smith and Hannah Simmons.
The couple had children: Franklin, born in 1863; John in 1865; and Charles in 1867. William Clazie died about 1870, exact date not found. The 1871 Canada census showed "Mary Clazie", a widow, lived in Thurlow Township, Ontario, with her children.
She remarried in 1877 to a widower, Henry Vivian, but this marriage was brief, just over two years. They had no children. Mary died, in October 1879, at Murray Township, Ontario, age about 44, and was buried at Shannonville, Ontario.
After her death, her children scattered: Franklin studied dentistry in Kentucky, then moved to California; John moved to Saskatchewan, then back to Ontario; Charles lived in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and British Columbia, finally returned to Manitoba.
