William was born in 1821 in Scotland, baptized at Ayton, Berwickshire on 24 June 1821. He was the son of William Clazie and Isabella Purves. They were shown in the 1841 UK census at Sunwick Cottages, Hutton, Berwickshire. He married Jane Grieve in 1847 at Edrom, Berwickshire and they were shown in the 1851 UK census at Coldingham, Berwickshire.
William and Jane migrated to Canada. The 1851 Canada census (actually taken in early 1852) showed William, his wife Jane, and son Thomas, at Halton, Ontario. (The census appears to show a "Bertram Clazie" also lived with them but this seems to have been an error, result of bad handwrirting, or bad indexing.)
The Clazie family were then shown in the 1861 Canada census at Murray Township, Ontario, but the "agricultural census" showed his name as "William Clasy". Jane died in 1862 and William remarried to Mary Jane Smith in 1864. They appear to have lived in Thurlow Township.
William passed away about 1870, exact date unknown. The 1871 Canada census showed that Mary Jane was a widow. [1]
