Biography

Carmelo Cascio is born and baptized 14 January 1799 in Corleone, the son of Maestro Antonino Cascio and Antonia Giantone. His godparents are Salvatore Giantone and Giuseppa Rizzo, wife of Maestro Antonio.

Carmelo, two of Carmelo's brothers, and his oldest son, are all called maestro. His son and brothers are master carpenters, making it likely Carmelo's profession, as well.

In 1807 Carmelo, age seven, lives with his parents, Maestro Antonino, 31 (b. 1776), and Antonina, 30 (b. 1777), and his siblings Francesco, 12 (b. 1795), Giuseppa, 14 (b. 1793), Salvatore, 5 (b. 1802), and Rosa, 2 (b. 1805), on the Vallone.

Carmelo (not yet a maestro) marries Pietra Bordonaro (the daughter of a maestro) on 15 June 1824. Carmelo's parents are both living at this time.

Carmelo and Pietra have eight known children: Maria Antonia (1826), Antonino (1827), Bernarda (1830), Leoluca (1834), Francesca Paola (1837), two sons named Gaetano (1839 and 1847), and Maria Concetta Domenica (1843).

Maria Antonia is born and baptized on 9 January 1826, probably named after her paternal grandmother. Her godparents are Maestro Antonino and Marianna di Gregorio, a married couple.

Antonino, named after Carmelo's father, is born and baptized 21 December 1827. His godparents are Ignazio Cusimano and Biagia Bordonaro.

Bernarda is born and baptized 26 September 1830, named after her maternal grandmother. Her godparents are Pietro and Francesca Marsala, brother and sister.

Living on the strada Grande in 1834 are Maestro Carmelo, 32 (b. 1799, he is 35), his wife Pietra, 29 (b. 1805), and children Antonio, 6 (b. 1827), Maria Antonia, 8 (b. 1826), and Bernarda, 4 (b. 1840). Another name, Filippo, is written, then crossed out and a cross written next to his name, suggesting he has died. There is no known son of this family named Filippo.

Two houses to the west on the strada di Favaloro (which is now called via Ostieri to the west of via Candelora, and via Mancaluso to the east), there is the family of Antonio Oliveri.

Leoluca is born and baptized on 19 August 1834. His godparents are Maestro Gioachino and Rosa Frisella, a married couple.

Francesca Paola is born and baptized on 2 March 1837. Her godparents are Girolamo and Giovanna Lipari, a married couple.

The first son named Gaetano is born 14 August 1839 and baptized the next day, named after his maternal grandfather. His godparents are Gaetano and Maria Vita Triolo, who are not married. He dies, reportedly at age three (actual age: two years and five months) on 21 January 1842.

Maria Concetta Domenica is born and baptized on 25 January 1843. Her godparents are Paolo Milone and his sister, Giuseppa.

The second son named Gaetano is born and baptized on 3 January 1847, named after his maternal grandfather. His godparents are Serafino Triolo and Rosa Gagliardo, a married couple.

Death of Carmelo

Carmelo dies, reportedly at age 50 (he is 48) on 11 July 1847. This record does not mention that Carmelo has ever married.

His youngest child, Gaetano, dies on 6 November 1847 at eleven months of age.

Seven years later, Carmelo's oldest child, Maestro Antonino, a master carpenter, marries for the first time, to Francesca Paola de Luca, on 24 July 1854.

Maria Concetta Carmela (as she is recorded in death) dies at age 20 on 11 July 1863.

Bernarda marries Matteo Salemi on 14 July 1864.

Bernarda dies, reportedly at age 36 (she is 35) on 2 February 1866. Her husband, Don Matteo, and her mother, Pietra, survive her.

Pietra dies at age 84 (b. 1795) on 29 April 1879.

Maestro Antonino remarries in 1882, to Arcangela Migliaccio.

Leoluca marries at least twice, to Giuseppa Raja and Lucia Raja (his first wife's sister.)

Maria Antonia dies at age 68 (b. 1826) on 24 June 1894. It does not appear that she ever marries.
