Category: Maestranze
The maestranze are the class of master artisans in Italian society. The arts, including stonemasonry, carpentry, shoemaking, and ironworking, are passed down in families and through apprenticeships. About ten percent of the households in Corleone in 1834 were headed by maestri, another ten percent by the nobility, and the rest were called villici (translated as villagers, but the words origins are in villeiny, or feudalism) or contadini (peasants). Each guild has its own courts and is a powerful lobbying force. During the revolutions of the late 18th and early 19th century, the maestranze and confraternities took active roles.
