Ellis was born on March 30, 1895, in Vienna, Missouri, to William and Anna King. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

Ellis was enumerated for the federal census on June 30, 1900. He was 5 years old at this time, and was living with parents William and Anna, siblings Virginia, Harriet, and Effie, and uncle Thomas Martin, in Jackson Township, Maries County, Missouri. [1]

Ellis was enumerated for the federal census on April 21 or 22, 1910. He was 15 years old at this time, and was living with mother Anna, siblings Virginia, Harriet, Effie, Francis, and Edna, and uncle John King, in Jackson Township, Maries County, Missouri. He was a farm laborer and attending school, and was noted to be able to read and write. [2]

Ellis registered for the draft on June 5, 1917, when he was 22 years old. At this time, he reported that he was an oil worker for Wolverine Oil Company in Avant, Oklahoma, where he lived. He was described as medium height and medium build, with blue eyes and brown hair. [3]

Ellis enlisted in the United States Army on April 27, 1918, when he was 23 years old. He was assigned to the 358th Infantry and had basic training at Camp Travis in San Antonio, Texas, after which he shipped out for Europe from New York on the ship Walmer Castle on June 20, 1918, landing in France on July 5 of that year. Ellis was killed in action in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive on November 1, 1918, in Meuse department, Lorraine region, France. His body was returned home and he was buried April 10, 1921, in Hibler Cemetery in Crawford County, Missouri. The funeral was described as "one of the largest crowds ever assembled in our city" by the local newspaper, with schools and businesses shuttering for the occasion. [5]
