Biography

William King was a Missourian.

William was born about November 1867 in Missouri. [1] [2] [3]

William was enumerated for the federal census on July 27, 1870. He was probably about 2 at this time (the census for this year gives his age as 5, but that's probably too old; subsequent censuses estimate his birth around 1867 and closer in age to his younger brother Adam), and was living with parents Adam and Anna, and siblings Charles, John, Adam, and Samuel, in Lanes Prairie, Missouri. [1]

William was enumerated for the federal census on June 18, 1880. He was about 12 at this time, and was living with parents Adam and Anna, and siblings Charles, John, Adam, Samuel, Mary, Hannah, and Margaret, in Jackson Township, Maries County, Missouri. He was a laborer of some kind, and could not read or write. [2]

On November 6, 1893, William was married to Anna Martin in Crawford County, Missouri, when he was about 25-26 years old. [4]

William was enumerated for the federal census on June 30, 1900. He was about 32 years old at this time, and was living with wife Anna, children Ellis, Virginia, Harriet, and Effie, and Anna's brother Thomas Martin, in Jackson Township, Maries County, Missouri. [3]

If the W. King buried in Vienna Public Cemetery is in fact this William King, William died on June 16, sometime between 1900 and 1909. The date comes from his headstone, while the year comes from the fact that he is alive on the 1900 census, while Anna is widowed by the 1910 census, which was taken before June of that year. For him to have died in June, then, he must have died between 1900 and 1909. We can possibly narrow it down further using the Vienna newspaper; a William King is referenced in a December 1903 article for gigging a 70-pound catfish on Shoal Creek, and a William King is referenced as deceased in a land claim from February 1908. Using those dates, his date of death can probably be narrowed further to 1904-1907. His wife is referenced in a September 1906 article as visiting his father's household from her home in Cuba, Missouri; he is not mentioned so it can be inferred that he had possibly died by that time already. It seems likely then, that his death would fall between 1904 and 1906. He was buried in Vienna Public Cemetery in Vienna, Missouri. [5] [6] [7] [8]
