Biography

John King was the 3rd son of William and Dorothy King. He was born in 1638 in Salem, Massachusetts Bay Colony. He was baptized November 1638 at First Church of Salem.[1][2]
When, after his father's death, his mother and some of his siblings went to settle in Southold, Long Island, John remained in Salem with his brother William, to whom he had been bound out until he became of age.[3]
In 1660 he married Elizabeth Goldthwaite, daughter of Thomas and Rachel Goldthwaite of Salem. Their homestead was next west of that of Thomas Goldthwaite, on land he gave to them, and remained in their family until it was sold by their grandson, Samuel King, Jr., in 1733 to David Goldthwaite. They had five sons and three daughters.[4]
John King was a cooper, as was also his oldest son John, as well as others of his family. He had died before Jan. 20, 1715, and his wife before Dec, 31, 1718, but both were living Sept. 9, 1714, when they witnessed the will of Samuel Goldthwaite.[4]

Research Notes

Joseph as possible son of this John King:
  • King, Joseph, son of John, bp. July ___ 1673, C.R. 1 (Vital Records of Salem, Mass. Vol.1, p. 493)
  • Joseph of John King -1673 July (The Records of the First Church of Salem, Mass. p. 30)
  • Joseph is unique as child of John in records, not of John and Elizabeth - and as a C.R. 1 (Church Record - First Church of Salem) - all other children are CT. R. (Court Record).
  • Born 1672 to early 1673, baptized July 1673, would fit the timeline of children
  • Possibly the son of another John King
  • see Joseph King
