Biography

Averilla was born in 1872 in Jackson, Clarke County, Alabama. She was the daughter of John Gilcrease and Nancy Gilcrease. She was enumerated with them on the 1880 United States Census for Clarke County, Alabama, however her name was misspelled in the record.[1]

Her last name at birth was spelled Gilcrease, but she and many other family members spelled it Gilchrist later on.

At least one family tree on Ancestry.com, that of a direct descendent, has her middle name as Althea, but this name does not appear on any records found so far and cited with this biography.[2]

She was first married to someone with the last name Morgan. She had two children from that relationship, Lillian A. Morgan and William McKinley Morgan (who later changed his name to Jack Deubler.) At the time of the 1900 United States she and her two children were living in the household of James Mitchell in Kaufman County, Texas. She is listed as a widow. The occupation given for her is "Housekeeper."[3]

She was married to August Deubler. The marriage probably took place in Texas about 1901 but a marriage record has not yet been found. In the 1910 United States Census for Blaine County, Oklahoma, August and Averilla are shown with four children they had together, Lawrence, John, Augustine, and Orville, and Averilla's two children from her previous relationship, Lillian and William.[4] The 1920 Census for Maricopa County, Arizona shows August and Averilla with the aforementioned four children, and another child added to the family--a son named Leroy. Granddaughter Ethel Wilson and Lodger Edgar Burnham are also residing with them in 1920.[5]

Averilla passed away in 1929 as a result of metastatic breast cancer and is buried in Greenwood Memory Lawn Cemetery located in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona. On her gravestone, her first name is spelled "Avarilla."[6][7]

In 1935, her brother, Edmond Gilchrist, was asked to give testimony regarding the make-up of his extended family in a case involving land in Texas which belonged to his uncle, Charner H. Gilchrist. About Averilla and her family, he said...

"... that he had two sisters, Averilla Gilchrist and Matilda Gilchrist; that all of said brother and sisters are dead except Matilda; ...that Averilla Gilchrist married Augustus Deubler and she had seven children, to wit: Jack, Lillian, Lawrence, John, Augustine, Orville, and Leroy; that to the best of his knowledge he has given the correct names of the children of his sister, Averilla:...""[8]

Research Note

Avarilla's birth date on her gravestone (a photograph of which may be seen at FindAGrave.com) and her own death certificate list her birth date as February 27, 1872, but the death certificate of her husband gives her birth date as March 26, 1858. The person supplying the information on August's death certificate was their daughter-in-law, wife of Lawrence Deubler.[9]

At FamilySearch.org, Noah Tipton Morgan has been linked to Averilla as her first husband and father of Lillian A. Morgan and William McKinley Morgan (aka Jack Deubler.) The 1900 United States Census records that Averilla was a widow. Noah Tipton Morgan was alive and married to someone else (m. Dovie Ray 1897) in 1900. Also, the 1910 United States Census Record for Noah Tipton Morgan says that his marriage to Dovie Ray was his first marriage. I have left a note on Averilla's FamilySearch profile, on the FamilySearch profiles of both Lillian A. Morgan and William McKinley Morgan (aka Jack Deubler), and on the FamilySearch profile of Noah Tipton Morgan that a source is needed for this assertion. Gilchrist-1197 13:11, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
