Gilles Chauvin was born and baptized on 3 Jun 1668 at Notre-Dame de Montréal, Canada, Nouvelle-France.,[1] He was the son of Pierre Chauvin of France and Marthe Autreuil.
Gilles Chauvin and Marie Cabassier were married 21 Jan 1697 at Notre-Dame de Montreal, Canada, Nouvelle-France.[2][3] Marie died in 1699.
Gilles and his first wife had two children (a son and a daughter). He and Angelique had 10 known children, including Louis Chauvin, born in 1702.
Gilles Chauvine and Angelique Guyon du Rouvray signed a marriage contract with Notarie Antoine Adhemar dit Saint-Martin on 24 Nov 1700.[4]

Gilles Chauvin died on 15 May 1731 and was buried 16 May 1731 at Notre-Dame de Montreal, Canada, Nouvelle-France.[6] He died six days after his wife, Angelique died.
Research Notes
'The Gilles who died in Montréal in 1731 cannot have been the Gilles who received a land grant in 1734, although both are said to have married Angelique Guyon. ~ Liz Shifflett, 15 January 2018
There is nothing in the land grant of 1734 that says that Gilles Chauvin was the husband of Angelique Guyon. It is also an assumption that the Sr Chauvin is Gilles Chauvin. There are assumptions made in the reference. He might have been in Detroit and might have traded there, but all his children were born in Montreal. It is clear he died in 1731 in Montreal and not later in Kaskaskia (that was his son Louis).
Gilles Chauvin was one of the early settlers at Detroit, arriving June 7, 1706. There were three men named Chauvin, perhaps brothers: Jean Baptiste, Louis and Gilles. He was given a land grant along Lake Erie June 16 1734 and was a partner of Louis Normand. Gilles married Angelique Guyon November 24, 1700. Angelique was a cousin to the wife of Cadillac.[7]
Estates and lands held under quit-rent at Detroit on Lake Erie. 16 June 1734. To the Sr. Chauvin, [footnote 3: Gillies Chauvin, voyageur. He was a partner of Louis Normand, and came to Detroit June 7, 1706.] settler at Fort Pontchartrain at Detroit, 2 arpents frontage by 40 deep.
Aigremont calls Chauvin a relative of Cadillac. The relationship was not very close. Jean Guyon had among his children two sons, Denis and Michel. Marie Therese Guyon, a daughter of Denis Guyon, born April 9, 1671, at Quebec, married Antoine de La Mothe Cadillac, June 25, 1687. Gilles Chauvin married Angelique Guyon, a daughter of Michel Guyon, November 24, 1700. Thus it will be seen that the wife of Cadillac and the wife of Gilles Chauvin were cousins. p. 440. He was a trapper and voyageur.[8]
.Chauvin, Gillis (Gilles), kept Indian furs, wife cousin to Cadillac, came to Detroit, 1706 p. 763.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Gilles by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Gilles:
Ancestry cites the Quebec, Canada, Vital and Church Records indicating that Gilles Chauvin was buried on 17 May 1731 in Montreal. He died on 16 May 1731 at the age of 63, which confirms the birth year of 1668. There is a pending merge of Chauvin-431 and Chauvin-51. The information in Chauvin-51 is more accurate.
1770 death with 1668 birth seems a bit off. I'm not a member of Ancestry - does the link lead to an actual source for death in 1770 in Kaskaskia, Illinois?
Joyeuse Chauvin-2 and Chauvin-51 appear to represent the same person because: His LNAB should have only the one name - Chauvin. Also, please retain the "after 1731" death date, as that is the only date with proof (he was living in 1731 - see text of Chauvin-51). If you have support for 1754 death date not already mentioned on Chauvin-51, please add it. Also please add support for son Phillippe if there is any. Thanks!
