Biography

Maria Carmela Cascio is born and baptized on 9 November 1873 in Corleone. She is the daughter of Marco Cascio and Tomassina Cusimano. Her godmother is Luigia Labruzzo, who is unmarried.

Maria Carmela's older brother, Stefano (b. 1858), is killed at age 35, on 18 June 1893, at the Agricultural Society casino, near the Piazza Inferiore.

Maria Carmela marries her younger first cousin, who is also named Stefano Cascio (b. 1875), on 27 September 1898. Their parents are all still living. Second degree consanguinity is detected between the bride and groom, according to the Church matrimonial record, but the word "Detecto" is crossed out and the word "Deleto" appears above it. There is no language here about receiving a dispensation for marriage. Instead, they are married with the verbal permission of Dean Ortoleva. One of the witnesses to the marriage is Giuseppe Catinella.

Maria Carmela and Stefano have at least one child, Salvatore (1899).

Salvatore is born 12 September 1899 and baptized 4 October, named after his paternal grandfather. His godparents are Vincenzo Cascio and Giuseppa Avallone, a married couple.[1]

According to margin notes in the record, as well as a memo included in the cresime records, Salvatore is confirmed in a building neighboring the Chiesa di San Domenico in Palermo in 1905.[2]The other note on Salvatore's baptismal record indicates he marries on 11 May 1963, to Anna Maria Busolini, in the Santuario di Pompei, which is in Naples.[1]

Maria Carmela dies sometime after 8 October 1962, the date on the aforementioned memo in which she attests to Salvatore's confirmation in Palermo.[3]
