Hi Wikitreers,
We have U.S. Civil War General Halbert Eleazer Paine (1826 - 1905) who was a Lawyer, Politician, and a military General! It also appears he was the author of “Paine On Contested Elections” which I find ironic considering the irony of todays era and that of so long ago…see also 1876 United States Presidential Election
I’d like to get this General connected but also some questions as to his last Will. It appears he left his wife and widow his estate but what about his “only” daughter? Eliza Brigham Paine Ladd was she not heir to anything? Why is her name referred to as “Story” (further research shows her husbands name was “Story”). Who inherited his rare huge library of books in his home he cherished…
Also it’s should be noted he died April 14th and his wife Eliza Leaworthy Brigham Paine died April 25th just days after in 1905…
He was also a big part of Wisconsin history being a congressman, served in the 4th Wisconsin etc…
”His book on contested elections was used as a reference In the Hayes-Tilden election controversy. He was also an authority on patent law and had compiled a treatise on this subject.”
“He paid special attention to the claims of the Choctaw and Chickasaw nations, and in his prime received some of the largest fees ever paid to an attorney in such cases.”
See Evening star, April 15, 1905, Page 2.
I’ll update further
Thank you
1.) Who were his wife’s parents? Was her mother a “Bidwell” of so that is a very historic name in Connecticut genealogy.
2.) Who were his parents?
3.) Who was the daughter and did she ever receive an inheritance? Did she have children? It appears she was an only child? Did she receive an education and what was her role in life? She has an obit see also Times Herald, January 18, 1922, Page 6 and Evening star, January 19, 1922, Page 18.
Addendum: It appears their 3 grandchildren of their only daughter had no children. End of the Line?
