Hi Wikitreers,

I think you will find this interesting but in my research I can only find one U.S. Civil War “Union” General whose LNAB begins with the letter “Q”

It appears he stands alone In this regard!

He still needs connecting and I think he as all the Union generals are very fascinating!

Thank you

Hi Roger,

That link has some excellent information about his military record.

I found in his obit that it’s mentioned he was a graduate of Princeton and this is Ivy League however I’m not seeing this on Wikipedia or in books I read…maybe another source to confirm but he graduated before going to West Point where he was 6th in his class far out pacing even Gen. Grant!

Class of 1843. Grant ranked 21st whereas his friend Quinby ranked 6th!

Makes me wonder who was 1st?
The guy was brilliant a professor of mathematics! Gee…

It looks like William B. Franklin (1823-1903), who was a Brevet Major General in the Volunteers, was No. 1.

This website says that his tutor was a Princeton graduate.

Here's a particularly good obituary from the Rochester paper:

Ahh! Thank you! Easy to find him with the category here is his Wikitree profile William Buel Franklin (1823 - 1903)

Heck of a class!

Interesting seems things allude to a Princeton education yet you would think if he was a graduate of Princeton it would be mentioned more…

Andrew,

Does that include all the Brevet Generals.  I am surprised to hear that only one had the letter Q start his family name.

Yep, checked the list of Brevets. Only 1 Q.  No U or X. 3 with Zs.  18 Smiths.
I added a photo and a short bio.  At least its something that can be expanded.

Also, there was one General in Confederate Army with the letter Q. William Andrew Quarles

Hi Norman,

Thank you for improving upon our U.S. Union Civil War General’s profile!

I didn’t know there are 3 that start with the letter “Z” as I’m still working on the “R” currently. The only one I found with the letter “Z” is Samuel Kosciusko Zook b. 3/27/1821. D. at Gettysburg I believe July 2, 1863? I wonder who the other “Z” might be? See link at FindAGrave

Edit: Wikitree profile for General Zook https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Zook-1234

There is a section under Appendix I of officers breveted as Major General or Brigadier General for services rendered during the Civil War, but not appointed to full rank. Per book Generals in Blue has Lewis Zahm, George M. Ziegler, George Zinn  and Samuel M. Zulich.

Andrew,

The 3 is a typo. It should have been a 4.  I did not notice that error. Sorry about the confusion.

Yes, I have Generals in Blue.  I see why there is so little about Brevet General George M Ziegler. I tried writing his full bio. The more I researched him the more confusing it became. I see why all the sites only mention his service record (and not his personal life). That is bio is still a work in progress. I'm taking a break from it.  I will return later and see if I can make sense of the confusing and conflicting records at FamilySearch.

One note about Ziegler. In the 1900 census he was listed as General George Ziegler.  (only census that listed him as "General").  I wonder if added General was the census taker's idea, or if it was Ziegler's idea. Since that is the only census record of his that I have found that called him General, I suspect the census taker did it.  (Still have not found his 1880 census record.)
