Hey Karen.

The author of the newspaper article quotes some excerpts from a publication by Cyprian Clamorgan entitled "The colored Aristocracy of St. Louis". He gives some examples of statistics on the distribution of wealth among the colored inhabitants. As one example is given:

"Samuel Mordecai is valued at 100,000 dollars, he used to be a steward on a steamboat. He sent his daughter to England to be educated there."

That little paragraph is all that is said about Samuel.

Thank-you. I had read that he was valued at $100,000 around 1860, but didn't know where the information came from, adjusted for inflation $2,160,000. He was enslaved till he was 10, in 1833, when his father purchased his freedom.

Thanks!

Karen
