No records found for Name: Heinrich Schmitt, Event: Residence, Place: Berlin, Event Range: 1940-1944, Spouse Name: Margot Schmitt, Country:Germany

The only records I found for Heidi Maria and Gudrun and their parents were located on www.myheritage.com and I don't have a membership that allows me to look at those records.

20th century records for Berlin should be available through a "Standesamt" but Berlin poses some difficulties: One has to find out which of the many "Standesämter" in Berlin has your records. The Berlin we know today came about only in 1920 (Groß-Berlin), prior to that there were about 120 Standesämter for the region. http://www.berlin.de/standesamt/ gets you to a page with some explanations and a link to a page etsablished to help people find the right Standesamt. It is in German, though. Descendents of deceased people are entitled to request copies of their documents in Germany but there are fees involved.

My thanks for the excellent reply. The registry office in Berlin is very confusing to me as there are 8-10 offices including a main office. I would not be able to search as my knowledge is limited. I will now turn to Berchtesgaden as my Grandmother and I lived there during the 1960's I believe I have relatives there on my mothers sister side. The Family Maltan I believe. They had a prosperous farm called Diedfeld Hof
Tons of Maltan in Berchtesgaden; Dietfeldhaus is a vacation home business today, and Dietfeld or Diedfeld appears as the name of a cross country ski trail nearby. Good luck!
This is absolutely fantastic, I recognize the foto!!! Dietfeldhof was the largest producing dairy farm back in the day. It was owned by the Family Maltan. My mothers sister married into the family after the war. When I lived in BGD I worked on the farm. I'm attemting to email the family that owns/operates it for further info.

Many thanks Helmut

Back to Heinrich and Margot Schmitt: The Zentral- und Landesbibliothek Berlin has address books up to 1943 on line (http://digital.zlb.de/viewer/image/10089470_1943/2679/ has all the Heinrich Schmitts living in Berlin in 1943) I your Heinrich is one of them we can try the Berlin Standesamt website to see which one would have his records.

Vielen Dank Helmut.

on a side note I sent an email to the archivast for Berchtesgadener Land at the Rathaus asking for info concerning the Family Maltan, as of yet not heard back.
Helmut, I counted 7 Heinrich Schmitt's. Without a spouse in the listing I would not even know where to look. I tried to find a Nazi party membership list and had no luck there, (I remember my grandmother saying that they were members.) Also I tried to see if there was a Ministry of Armaments list, as my grandfather was an electrical engineer. I also recall my Grandmother and my mother saying that the family worked and lived in Paraguy. My grandfather helped construct the electrical railway system in Paraguy before Hitler recalled all German nationals to return home.
I have received an email from Heidi Maltan from Australia. I believe her to be a cousin. Will give more detail after contacting her.
