Birthplace Hogue New York in Fold3

Question

Hi Wikitreers,

While researching the Webster family and their sons service in the U.S. Civil War i have the source to the fold3 for John Webster but his birthplace is unusual as I can not locate this place in New York named Hogue?

Does Hogue New York exist or did it exist? A typo on a word for this place maybe in translation?

Any collaboration on the Webster family is appreciated

Edit: since the posting of this question I was able to find a Hague which is in the county of his birth that being Warren County, New York

I've been making a list of places in New York that no longer exist. I started with Long Island because lots of places had unfamiliar names during my research. I found some listings and gazetteers and have a list of early names, later names, with the county, etc. I also have a list of villages dissolved since 1900.

Hogue was not on any of them. I couldn't even find anything close. Except Quogue on Long Island, but I don't think that is it. There's Hog's Island. No. Also, two villages used to be called Hobe. I don't think it's that either.

I think it is a misspelling of Hague, Warren County, New York. It is located in the Eastern Adirondacks near Lake George.

There are quite a few places on Long Island that end in -ogue, not just Quogue, eg Patchogue, Aquebogue, Lake Munchogue, Cutchogue…I’ve always assumed the ending meant “place of” or something.
