John D Miles (abt. 1826 - abt. 1866) Needs Fold3 sources

Hi Wikitreers

I need someone with fold3 access to find more about his pension and date of death. I have found the pension source which shows he apparently died in the year 1866? If that being the case he passed just after the close of the U.S. Civil War and I’d like to see if he had a beneficiary?

The merge pending doesn’t seem to fit this veteran as it’s unlikely he is from kentucky or died there but more sources needed.

Note: he is a veteran of the 106th NYV Co. I.

Thank you

Here's a copy of that pension card:

Not the best copy, but it reflects his beneficiary as his widow Angeline Miles.

I think based on the fact his wife and beneficiaries name is Angeline Miles we can reject the merge request. Still researching…

I found his wife’s FindAGrave Memorial a gravestone that seals the relationship between her and John D. Miles. In Franklin county. Now need obit

See her memorial Here

Need her maiden name but she died in 1900

Edit: here is a twist another Mrs. John D. Miles passing away in December 1886. See https://nyshistoricnewspapers.org/lccn/sn83031566/1886-12-16/ed-1/seq-5/ however her first name isn’t given and likely not another Angeline

Angeline’s daughter is Florence Morgan b. 1870. It’s possible Angeline remarried a “Morgan” to her daughter married a “Morgan” or maybe John D. Miles died after later in life than before 1870

Born England  (I got the date wrong). It was Age 36.

Farmer

Blue eyes

Sandy hair

Complexion fair

5' 7 1/2"
Discharge June 5, 1865 at Albany
June 4, 1866 filed for invalid pension Cert. 116,299

Application No. 109211

All I've found so for is the index card
Wildow filed application 579008

Certificate 1148971

Also from index card
He died after the War, the widow's claim application is not with the Civil War WC files.  Not sure I can find it on Fold3.

With the pension numbers,, you may find it at Ancestry
Since there is an invalid application and pension awarded, he must have filed just before he died.
For what it's worth. There was a John W Miles, 22nd KY Infantry who's widow filed for a pension.

Hannah E (Arthur) Miles was the Kentucky widow
Andrew, I have a Fold3 account. Anything you need something from there, please let me know. I will look for it.
I looked at the other John Miles (from Kentucky). His FamilySearch profile says he was born in Trimble Co., KY. In every census, he lists his birth in KY. Alsok his census records from 1850 on all are KY residence.

This does not look to me to be the same person as who served in the 106th.  I cannot see a guy with a family from Trimble Co. KY enlisting in Malone, NY.

Could this be your John Miles.

John Miles 1860 census

Right county (Malone is in Franklin County).

Birth year close. Birth place England. Wife named Ann.  That could be short for Angeline.

This 1860 census is highly likely him as he enlisted at Malone (Franklin County) New York. Wife/Beneficiary name Is Angeline Miles.

Also a fold3 matching profile of a veteran with same name shows England born

I agree 100%

Edit: merge rejected with note of explanation
