2023 November Connectors' Monthly Challenge [closed]

Hi Connectors! The November Connectors Challenge is up and running. :D

This is a monthly challenge and open to everyone. The goal is to connect parents, create profiles or propose merges, etc. to connect unconnected branches to the main tree. Scoring is of branches connected to the tree, not individual profiles. So whether a branch consists of two people or ninety-two people, it still counts as ONE connection. Unlike the Connect-a-Thon, only actual connections made are counted, not the number of profiles created to get to a connection.

The Connector’s Challenge Rules:

 1. Pick an existing profile (created before this month’s challenge began) that is not currently connected to the Global Family Tree. (Hint: If you are a member of the Connectors Project, you’ll see a yellow puzzle piece icon next to that person’s name at the top of their profile if they aren’t connected.)

2. Add a profile for any first degree relative for that profile (a parent, spouse, child, or sibling). Continue adding first degree relatives until you run into a profile that is already connected to the Global Family Tree that you can attach to. Remember to use good sources to support the creation or connection of every profile you make! Please be aware that it takes 24 hours for the tree to update and show the connection.

3. ANSWER this post. This lets us know that you’re participating in this month’s challenge. It’s easiest for us to track your trail if you post it here, but you can also use the Challenge Tracker. Just be sure you comment “Connected to Smith-000” when you make the connection to the already existing, already connected profile. Replace Smith-000 with the actual profile ID of the starting profile you were trying to connect. And there can be only ONE connection per branch!

4. Remember the tally is not of profiles created (like the Connect-a-Thon) but of actual connections made to the Global Family Tree. You might connect a whole branch of profiles and make 100 new profiles in the process of making a connection, but the connection only counts as 1.

5. If you enjoy challenges, keep in mind that adding good sources to any existing profiles you run into while connecting or fixing errors on those existing profiles might count towards the Sourcerers or Data Doctors Challenges.

6. Let us know if you’d like a Connector’s Badge for participating. That will also make you a part of our project and we’d love to have you! Stats are kept and updated on the Connectors Challenge page. The link to the tracker will follow.

P.S.  I'm new to posting the challenge, so if anything is wonky, please let me know.  Thank you!

I made another connection, and have forgotten how to register it.

I linked https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Bissett-928 to https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Mathieson-372

Actually, this tree was very confused.  Bissett had 2 wives and I created a duplicate before realising they were the same person.  I suggested a merge, the net result being that the other half of his family is now connected to the main tree.

This was where I started: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Findlay-721
Hi Catherine,

From the profile you are connecting TO the tree, make your connection(edit) and then hit the tracker button.

If the button is gone now, go into that profile and make a small edit and then save, hit the tracker button.

Hope that helps!

Challenge Tracker

P.S.  Did I do this right?  Yell if not.

That tracker link is not working yet, but I think it should become effective once the calendar flips to the first of the month.

Will participate.  Did a search for Orphan - Indiana - unconnected and there are over 5,000 so asked for just 19 cen and still over 5,000. Should be able to connect someone on those pages.

Here is my first connection for this month:

American Football player Herbert Anthony Adderley will be connected with that one.

I started with Herbert's great-grandfather, added his brother John. John's wife is Mollie Poindexter, whose father Gabriel is in the database and connected.

by Jelena Eckstädt G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
Great New Jelena!  Thank you for joining!

I connected Donald N Aldrich going up his paternal line to his greatgranddad Lyell Thompson Aldrich who is connected to the Big Tree.

I connected unconnected Kermit Peace with his maternal grandfather Madison Perry Lewallen by creating the mother/daughter.

I connected Babe Adams with his parents {his father)

I connected Joseph Peter Aderhold with his grandfather by creating the father/son.

Unconnected Ruth (Downs) Allen got her father Thomas Downs, whose brother Patrick is already in the database and connected.

Unconnected Thomas Haggerty was connected to his brother Peter C. Haggerty. I had to create the father to do that.

YAY, Discord finally taught me how to use the tracker. And it worked, so now my connections will be counted by the tracker.
I love Discord.  Glad you are in!

Hi , I'd like to try out the challenge this month (and get a badge)

To check I understand the tracking rule in point #3, I post a comment under the profile that was Unconnected and that I just connected to the world tree ? And also click the tracker?
by Matt McNabb G2G6 Mach 3 (37.5k points)

Awesome Matt!   Welcome!  I've awarded your badge.

Comment “Connected to Smith-000” when you make the connection to the already existing, already connected profile. Replace Smith-000 with the actual profile ID of the starting profile you were trying to connect. And there can be only ONE connection per branch!

Hope that helps!

Thanks Melissa -- I'm asking which profile I should place the comment under  (the last unconnected one, or the one on the world tree it was connected to)
The one on the world tree it was connected too.  That's how I understand it.   But include the profile ID of the one you were trying to connect in the comments.
OK great. I see the Challenge Tracker also allows a comment in the tracker (seperate to comments on the profile), any guidelines for that?
I use the comment hints (on the right) for the comment field.

I would like to participate please!
by Monica Palmer G2G6 Mach 1 (15.3k points)
Welcome Monica!   I have you added!

I made a connection:

I started with Lydia Konnerth and added her husband Robert Hunter. I then added his father Russell Hunter. I connected Russell to his father who was already on the tree Enos Cooper Hunter.

To make sure I understand... do I mark the challenge tracker on Lydia who I started with or Enos who I connected to?

ETA: corrected links

To the already connected profile...

Just be sure you comment “Connected to Smith-000” when you make the connection to the already existing, already connected profile. Replace Smith-000 with the actual profile ID of the starting profile you were trying to connect.

I'll have a go at the unconnected Calcutts (they have been bugging me for a while!).  There are only 6 of them and I think I have found a family of 3 of them on Family Search.  Will investigate further!
