2022 November Connectors' Monthly Challenge [closed]

Hi Connectors! The November Connectors Challenge is up and running. :D

This is a monthly challenge and open to everyone. The goal is to connect parents, create profiles or propose merges, etc. to connect unconnected branches to the main tree. Scoring is of branches connected to the tree, not individual profiles. So whether a branch consists of two people or ninety-two people, it still counts as ONE connection. Unlike the Connect-a-Thon, only actual connections made are counted, not the number of profiles created to get to a connection.

The Connector’s Challenge Rules:

 1. Pick an existing profile (created before this month’s challenge began) that is not currently connected to the Global Family Tree. (Hint: If you are a member of the Connectors Project, you’ll see a yellow puzzle piece icon next to that person’s name at the top of their profile if they aren’t connected.)

2. Add a profile for any first degree relative for that profile (a parent, spouse, child, or sibling). Continue adding first degree relatives until you run into a profile that is already connected to the Global Family Tree that you can attach to. Remember to use good sources to support the creation or connection of every profile you make! Please be aware that it takes 24 hours for the tree to update and show the connection.

3. ANSWER this post. This lets us know that you’re participating in this month’s challenge. It’s easiest for us to track your trail if you post it here, but you can also use the Challenge Tracker. Just be sure you comment “Connected to Smith-000” when you make the connection to the already existing, already connected profile. Replace Smith-000 with the actual profile ID of the starting profile you were trying to connect. And there can be only ONE connection per branch!

4. Remember the tally is not of profiles created (like the Connect-a-Thon) but of actual connections made to the Global Family Tree. You might connect a whole branch of profiles and make 100 new profiles in the process of making a connection, but the connection only counts as 1.

5. If you enjoy challenges, keep in mind that adding good sources to any existing profiles you run into while connecting or fixing errors on those existing profiles might count towards the Sourcerers or Data Doctors Challenges.

6. Let us know if you’d like a Connector’s Badge for participating. That will also make you a part of our project and we’d love to have you! Stats are kept and updated on the Connectors Challenge page. The link to the tracker will follow.

So this is my first connection for November:

Unconnected Peter Flemming got his son Herman Paul Flemming. Herman got his wife Eva (Karns) Fleming who got connected to her father John Karns. John is already connected to the Big Tree.

by Jelena Eckstädt G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
selected by Sally Kimbel

Unconnected Sibilla (Scholl) Watry got her husband Nicholas Watry who is connected.

Unconnected William Brandhorst got his daughter Sophia. I created her husband and father-in-law, whose father Henry Brunk is already connected.

Unconnected William Reed got his father Elihu, whose father John Reed is already connected.

Unconnected Paul Christof Koeber was connected with his also unconnected son Paul Ernest Koeber. I then created PE's wife and her mother, who I could connect to her father, who is already connected.

Unconnected Margaret (Harvey) Miller got her father, who got his father Isaac. Isaac himself got his father William whose father George is already connected.

While I was creating a profile for Isaac Harvey's wife Sarah, I got her unconnected profile as suggestion. So she and her branch will also be connected with her grandfather-in-law.

Unconnected Lilian Jane (McDougall) Eastman got her husband Joseph Steele Eastman, who got his father John Calvin Eastman and John's father Jacob. Jacob's father James is connected to the Big Tree.

Unconnected Albert Horner got his connected wife.

I initiated a merge between connected Benjamin Chase and unconnected Benjamin Chase.

Unconnected Lavinia (Lackland) Hempstead got connected with her father Dennis.

I'm in for this month.

  1. Connected my childhood neighbor Andy Iler to his wife's great-great granduncle https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Adams-38473 who was already on WikiTree. Along the way there were immigrants from Austria-Hungary, multiple early deaths from consumption, lack of consistent records, and a guy who had 4 kids with his first wife and then after she died, married her younger sister and had at least 12 more. This was my soap opera for the last few days.
  2. Connected John Willke to his great-grandfather Jacob Van der Horst

I don't know why these links aren't right. Is there a missing or extra space in them?

Please advise...thanks...one month on WT.
To create "normal" links, you have to copy the URL of the profile (just beside the "Wiki Link"). The Wiki Link is used when you want to link the profile in a biography. (Like - being on the profile of George Lee Kimbel and you write in the biography: "He was married to [[Piotraschke-7|Theresa Pauline Piotraschke (1897-1983)]]")
Thanks Jelena! Links fixed.

Looks like all text boxes within WT don't work the same. Those within the G2G work like some other software, like WordPress, using the chain emblem in the toolbar to create links via a URL.

It appears that text boxes within Profiles and Free-Space pages (also called Space pages) use special characters, single or multiple, like [ { | ~ # * to call up coding (perhaps called templates) to control how text displays on those kinds of pages.

I really appreciate the help!
