2023 September Connectors' Monthly Challenge

Hi Connectors! The September Connectors Challenge is up and running. :D

This is a monthly challenge and open to everyone. The goal is to connect parents, create profiles or propose merges, etc. to connect unconnected branches to the main tree. Scoring is of branches connected to the tree, not individual profiles. So whether a branch consists of two people or ninety-two people, it still counts as ONE connection. Unlike the Connect-a-Thon, only actual connections made are counted, not the number of profiles created to get to a connection.

The Connector’s Challenge Rules:

 1. Pick an existing profile (created before this month’s challenge began) that is not currently connected to the Global Family Tree. (Hint: If you are a member of the Connectors Project, you’ll see a yellow puzzle piece icon next to that person’s name at the top of their profile if they aren’t connected.)

2. Add a profile for any first degree relative for that profile (a parent, spouse, child, or sibling). Continue adding first degree relatives until you run into a profile that is already connected to the Global Family Tree that you can attach to. Remember to use good sources to support the creation or connection of every profile you make! Please be aware that it takes 24 hours for the tree to update and show the connection.

3. ANSWER this post. This lets us know that you’re participating in this month’s challenge. It’s easiest for us to track your trail if you post it here, but you can also use the Challenge Tracker. Just be sure you comment “Connected to Smith-000” when you make the connection to the already existing, already connected profile. Replace Smith-000 with the actual profile ID of the starting profile you were trying to connect. And there can be only ONE connection per branch!

4. Remember the tally is not of profiles created (like the Connect-a-Thon) but of actual connections made to the Global Family Tree. You might connect a whole branch of profiles and make 100 new profiles in the process of making a connection, but the connection only counts as 1.

5. If you enjoy challenges, keep in mind that adding good sources to any existing profiles you run into while connecting or fixing errors on those existing profiles might count towards the Sourcerers or Data Doctors Challenges.

6. Let us know if you’d like a Connector’s Badge for participating. That will also make you a part of our project and we’d love to have you! Stats are kept and updated on the Connectors Challenge page. The link to the tracker will follow.

Does the tracker only show if you have 2 or more connections made?
It's a little slow to update, but it should show once you've made one connection and used the tracker.
I can't seem to find the tracking tool. Sometimes it will pop up when I am making a change to a profile, but it's not doing it consistently.
Oddly, when you make a connection by "Connect an existing profile", you won't see the tracker. I just use the previous Edit result, or make an edit to one of the existing profiles to get the tracker.
Octobers Challenge sign up is where ?? People are trying to sign up - I see that there is already someone working/signed up on the challenge but there is no sign up G2G page visible??

I would like to join.   My numbers will be very low as I'm not so good at this.  My unconnected profiles (on my watchlist) need to get connected.   I have one profile with 34 connections but it is not connected to the big tree.   Plus I'm eager to get the icon that says they are not connected so I can work outside of my Watchlist.  If thats ok.

Help Please:   I don't see the puzzle icon on profiles?   I also don't have the 'Connectors' channel in Discord.   Is there something I need to do?  Maybe it doesn't happen till the end of the month?

(Hint: If you are a member of the Connectors Project, you’ll see a yellow puzzle piece icon next to that person’s name at the top of their profile if they aren’t connected.)

Hi Melissa! Are you seeing the icon and your badge now? I was waiting for this month to see them but I'm not :( did you get any response?
I don't believe i see the icon.  I can use the WBE extension to tell if someone is connected but no yellow puzzle piece.

Also i don't have Connectors channel in Discord under Functional Projects.   Not sure how you get that.

I will take a break for some time but just a question:

I connected some profiles before this challenge started. In total, it was 63 branches and 119 unlinked profiles. The connection was, however, made by only connecting one profile (in this case Wikström-215) to the global tree. All different branches were connected via private profiles and therefore split in the reports at WikiTree+. Would this count as one connection (only one profile was connected) or 63 connections (because 63 branches were connected)? All profiles (except the private ones) can be seen in WikiTree+ a couple of more days by the filter "manager=Indutnyi-1 unconnected".

Usually, it's not easy to know if private profiles have split the branch in the reports at WikiTree+.

Best regards Axel S.

Oh, that's an interesting one. Was it a gedcom import that resulted in all the profiles unlinking? That's usually where I see that.

To answer your question though, if they were all separate branches, then it's one point per branch connected. It gets too technical if you dig into it, because if you connected all the unlinked profiles or small branches together first and THEN connected them as one large branch to the main tree, then it's really only 1 connection. But if you connected them one by one to the main tree via the one profile you created to connect them to the tree, then it's 182 connections.

So short answer is, if I'm understanding it correctly, I would count it as 182 connections.
It was not GEDCOM import and I did not connect the unconnected branches because I'm not manager of the private profiles. The reason for the disconnect branches were that the only connection to the different profiles were one or several private profiles that I can not see because WikiTree+ does not have them in the reports.

I only did one connection and it resulted in more than 2,500 profiles got connected (2,498 shown profiles plus about maybe 200 private profiles. I later did a reconnect to get the profiles closer to QEII (and me).

Would maybe have killed the competition on day one with this connection if I did it a day later and joined the challenge...

I'd like to participate this month. It seems to me that this meshes nicely with the one place study that is monopolizing my time, and also with my side goal to see my CC7 count make it past the 1000 mark. (74 to go!) A little incentive to find those connections and get all of my lines fleshed out.

Here is my first connection for this month. Stick with me, it took some profiles to connect this branch of 9:

I started with Hermann Hempen, added his older sister Johanna. (Btw, in Johanna's death entry I found the LNAB of her mother, so there is one Unknown LNAB resolved as well.) Then I added her husband Harm Redenius. Their son Joe is the next profile. The trail continues with Joe's wife Bessie and her sister Elizabeth. Elizabeth was married to Irving Wasmund, who had a sister Louise. Louise's husband Anthony got his father William and William's brother Joseph Albert was finally the one that was already in the database.

by Jelena Eckstädt G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)

I started with unconnected Gordon Lester House. I added his James Caldwell House and James' brother Warren. Warren is married to Sarah (Shumate) House. Sarah's father George William Shumate is connected.

I started with unconnected John E. Merchant. His mother is Bertie (Adair) Merchant and her sister Maude May (Adair) Griggs is already connected.

I started with unconnected Heinrich Junkers, added his brother Johann Junkers and Johann's daughter Elise. She married Gustav Heinrich Seyd. Gustav's father Friedrich is the brother of Caroline (Seyd) Schütte, who is already connected.

I'm not participating in this, as of yet, but just wanted to say that how you wrote out the connections finally made sense to my brain! And is something I can basically use as a template whenever I circle around to connecting people - whether my own relatives or others

I started with unconnected Benjamin F. Reich, added his son William C. Reich and then William's wife Barbara. Barbara's brother is already connected.

I initiated a merge of unlinked Clara Mildred Yetter in connected Clara Mildred Yetter

I started with unconnected Raymond John Krieger, added his wife Ivy (Burkholder) Krieger, her mother Clara (Yoder) Burkholder and her father Daniel Yoder. Daniel's father Joseph J. Yoder is connected.

Hang on, this is a connection of several unlinked and unconnected trees, which became one before they were connected to the Big Tree.

I started with unlinked Johanna Hubertine Haas. In her birth entry at FamilySearch I found her parents, so I created them. The FamilySearch-Tree connected her mother Catharina Elisabeth (Weitmann) Haas to her father Heinrich Weytmann or Weitmann, who already had a profile at WikiTree, but was not connected. After much looking around in the further children of Catharina I found eventually the daughter Maria Wilhelmina (Haas) Beitz, where I could find two daughters (Catharina and Carolina), who were also both unlinked. I created Maria Wilhelmina's husband Johann Friedrich Beitz. Friedrich's sister Margaretha (Beitz) Retzel is married to Josef Retzel. Josef's father Johann and most of his siblings were undated. Fortunately Johann's father Christian was dated and I could date most of his children. Christian is  connected to the Big Tree.

Participating! Already have a badge. Will use the tracker. Just completed my first one. May have used the tracker a little awkwardly since I worked top to bottom to make the connection, but got it recorded:

Lusk-2013: connected to Lusk-1268 (thru adding 3 gen. on paternal line - connected existing 34 profile branch)

by Linda Mearse G2G6 Mach 1 (11.0k points)
connected Drinkard-300 to main tree Drinkard-44 (surprisingly another 34 profile branch - shortening my unconnecteds list!)

I'm trying to use the tracker, but these are not showing up. My Sourcerers Challege entries are are showing up, so I'm not sure if it's me or something in the tracking system not working properly. I'll keep adding here until they show up thru the tracker.
