2023 JUNE Connectors Monthly Challenge

Howdy Connectors! It's time for the JUNE Monthly Connectors Challenge!

This is a monthly challenge and open to everyone. The goal is to connect parents, create profiles or propose merges, etc. to connect unconnected branches to the main tree.

Scoring is of branches connected to the tree, not individual profiles created. So, whether a branch consists of two people or ninety-two people, it still counts as ONE connection. Unlike the Connect-a-Thon, only actual connections made are counted, not the number of profiles created to get to a connection.

The Connector’s Challenge Rules:

 1. Pick an existing profile (created before this month’s challenge began) that is not currently connected to the Global Family Tree. (Hint: If you are a member of the Connectors Project, you’ll see a yellow puzzle piece icon next to that person’s name at the top of their profile if they aren’t connected.)

2. Add a profile for any first degree relative for that profile (a parent, spouse, child, or sibling). Continue adding first degree relatives until you run into a profile that is already connected to the Global Family Tree that you can attach to. Remember to use good sources to support the creation or connection of every profile you make! Please be aware that it takes 24 hours for the tree to update and show the connection.

3. ANSWER this post. This lets us know that you’re participating in this month’s challenge. It’s easiest for us to track your trail if you post it here, but you can also use the Challenge Tracker. Just be sure you comment “Connected to Smith-000” when you make the connection to the already existing, already connected profile. Replace Smith-000 with the actual profile ID of the starting profile you were trying to connect. And there can be only ONE connection per branch!

4. Remember the tally is not of profiles created (like the Connect-a-Thon) but of actual connections made to the Global Family Tree. You might connect a whole branch of profiles and make 100 new profiles in the process of making a connection, but the connection only counts as 1.

5. If you enjoy challenges, keep in mind that adding good sources to any existing profiles you run into while connecting or fixing errors on those existing profiles might count towards the Sourcerers or Data Doctors Challenges.

6. Let us know if you’d like a Connector’s Badge for participating. That will also make you a part of our project and we’d love to have you! Stats are kept and updated on the Connectors Challenge page.

I have my first connection for the month: Grace Elizabeth Barling got her paternal line up to her 2ggf John Barling, who is already connected. That way a branch of 150 profiles gets connected.

by Jelena Eckstädt G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
Wow, Jelena! That's a good one to get connected!

Next one: Unconnected Wilbur Sachsenmeier got his father Henry Sachsenmeier, whose mother Mary Sachsenmeier is connected.

And next one: Unconnected Ellen (Harper) Legasey got her husband, who got his father to connect him to his brother. 31 more profiles connected.

Here is my next one: Laverne (Lotz) Maler got her husband. He got his father and granddad to be able to create/connect the second son. Fred's wife got her mother and granddad. Another daughter of Onophion, Anna Maria (Ganzmann) Adolph was already in the database and is connected.

Next one: Connected Dora (Maremont) Fienberg to her father Isaac, who is connected

The next one started with Daniel Hebner, who actually only became a Hebner after his emigration to the USA. His daughter Mary Minnie (Hebner) Stauffer is the next one in the connection. For her husband Fred Stauffer Minnie was his second wife. With his first wife Florence (Blackburn) Stauffer he had the daughter Alice (Stauffer) Wright. The husband of Alice was Merrill D Wright, who was the son of Wilbur F Wright.. Wilbur's father Daniel Wright was already in the database and is connected.

Edit: Daniel Hebner actually waited for a connection since September 2011.

Next one: Unconnected Charles Louch got his father, who got his father, who got his father. There was already a profile for Samuel's brother, but the dates he had were that of their father John. So I also corrected that one and created a profile for the father. Brother John has a daughter Betty, and she was already in the database and was connected.

I've been incidently attempting to connect a quite large group, over 100 I think, which includes Singleton-5092. Is there a way to see how many profiles are connected to this one?
by Gary Houston G2G5 (6.0k points)

Click this link. Currently, the above profile is part of a branch of 16 354+ profiles.

Thanks, but that's just the first 4 degrees. I loaded further up to degree 9, and it was still going.
Using the BEE, the connections out to 14 Degrees is 354+ profiles.
Thanks, I knew it was big.
This reminds me of a guy, I forget his name, that I was trying to connect and wound up creating over 200 profiles and still didn't find the connection. In frustration, I left off for about 6 months. When I returned to it, I eventually found the connection. That was very satisfying.
Hilarious. At least they will all be there for future connections.

This batch I'm looking at is No. 1 for unconnected profiles with the surname "Houston".
I'm thinking it may be easier to track down one of their living descendants and marry them. Would I still get a point for that?
