Our most recent WikiTree Challenge was in collaboration with mitoYDNA.org. So, next week in the Connection Finder we're featuring the seven starting profiles with extraordinary mitochondrial and Y-chromosome lineages:

  1. Ocaan Ro (abt.0970-) Ireland. Gained 111 YDNA descendants during the challenge.
  2. Katherine (Roet) Swynford (1350-1403) France. Gained 54 mtDNA descendants.
  3. Catherine (Unknown) Strutt (abt.1520-bef.1578) England. Gained 525 mtDNA descendants.
  4. Ivar (Ivar II of Waterford) of Waterford (abt.0945-1000) Ireland. Gained 114 YDNA descendants.
  5. John Thorpe (abt.1608-abt.1633) England, Massachusetts Bay. Gained 163 YDNA descendants.
  6. Michele Sauvagie (-aft.1632) France, Netherlands. Gained 155 mtDNA descendants.
  7. Katharina (Pfannberg) von Pfannberg (bef.1332-aft.1374) Bavaria. Gained 229 mtDNA descendants.

Who else should we feature? We have room for eleven notables. We can't feature everyone who is nominated, but if we don't feature a profile you work on, we may use it sometime in the future. And, of course, all contributions help improve our shared tree.

Our choice of features will depend partly on the notable person's CC7, i.e. their connection count within seven degrees. The more connections they have, the more likely it is for all WikiTree members to find a close and interesting connection to them. So, if you nominate someone, please help grow their CC7.

We'll make a final decision on which ones to feature early next week.

Please reply here with what you're working on so that we don't duplicate our efforts. Thank you!

Take note that this is not the place to discuss why you think we shouldn't feature someone if those reasons are due to politics, actions, or opinions of those being suggested.  Mentioning things like their not being connected, their biography still needing work, erroneous information, etc. are all suitable for discussion here and an opportunity to correct those situations.

Help us plan Connection Finder themes for 2023 here.

In addition to adding a few more to our list, which of the original seven from the DNA challenge should we feature as the primary example profile next week?

Out of the list above, probably the most well-known is Katherine (Roet) Swynford, mistress of John of Guant.
I recommend that Catherine Strutt be featured because her matrilineal line gained the most mtDNA relatives (525) and her line is very long considering that she and her mtDNA descendants don't belong to nobility, and direct maternal lines are more difficult to trace because of surnames usually change each generation.
Thanks, Shonda and Peter.

Ralph Waldo Emerson might be a good candidate for this, as he has both autosomal and mitochondrial DNA connections already, and seems to have potential for more.

Besides being a renowned poet, philosopher and abolitionist, perhaps most importantly, my freshman dormitory at UC Davis was named after him!

Hello Abby,

Here are 4 more starting profiles I suggest who's descendant has their Y-DNA or mtDNA in mitoYDNA.org:

>>>>>>>>>>>

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Breau-4

Marie Breau (b. abt 1616).  Her matrilineal line includes two sufficiently matching mtDNA 10th cousins.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Jane Cole (b. 1522). Her matrilineal line has extends back 17 generations: https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special:Relationship&action=calculate&person1_name=Erdoes-1&person2_name=Bond-413&relationshipLimit=maternal

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Charibert Neustria (b. abt 590).  His patrilineal line includes King Louis XVII’s Y-DNA and extends back 42 generations:

Gofraid Godfrey (b. abt 800). His patrilineal line extends back 34 generations:

Thanks, Peter.

I know it is probably too late, but I wouldn't use Charibert Neustria (Neustria-20).  Although he is connected up in WikiTree much of the genealogy is very uncertain, and some parent-child relationships should definitely be disconnected.  Instead you could use Robert 'le Fort' (the Strong)  He is the earliest confirmed ancestor in the male line that still includes King Louis XVII.

How about the very common "gateway ancestor," Katherine Jennings Branch https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Jennings-452

She has long been recognized as a gateway ancestor for those migrating to the colonies to connect to the British royal family.

Unfortunately Katherine does not appear to have an extraordinary mitochondrial lineage because none of Katherine’s daughters in WikiTree have had daughters.
OK. Thanks for checking!
Thanks, Greg.
