Help us find and improve next week's Connection Finder profiles: Foodies

In recognition of our current WikiTree Challenge guest star, DNA Chef, Meli Alexander, we're looking at food influencers -- "foodies" -- in the Connection Finder next week.

Here are some of the foodies we're considering:

 • Selena Gomez, Selena + Chef and Selena + Restaurant, unconnected
 • Ree Drummond, "The Pioneer Woman"
 • Matty Matheson, chef and Neil Fak on The Bear, unconnected but his grandparents of French Canadian origin are now on his tree, so he could be connected by someone with knowledge there.

Who else should we feature? We have room for 12 individuals. We can't feature everyone who is nominated, but if we don't feature a profile you work on, we may use it sometime in the future. And, of course, all contributions help improve our shared tree.

Our choice of features will depend partly on the notable person's CC7, i.e. their connection count within seven degrees. The more connections they have, the more likely it is for all WikiTree members to find a close and interesting connection to them. So, if you nominate someone, please help grow their CC7.

Suggestions are more likely to be considered if you provide a link to the person on WikiTree, some information about who they were or why you're nominating them, and if their profile is in good condition with a connection, image, and well-written and well-sourced biography.

We'll make a final decision on which ones to feature early next week.

Please reply here with what you're working on so that we don't duplicate our efforts. Thank you!

Take note that this is not the place to discuss why you think we shouldn't feature someone if those reasons are due to politics, actions, or opinions of those being suggested. Mentioning things like their not being connected, their biography still needing work, erroneous information, etc. are all suitable for discussion here and an opportunity to correct those situations.

Help us choose themes for 2024 Connection Finder themes here.

If you could get Matty hooked up to his paternal grandfather (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Matheson-3349) and great-grandparents (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Matheson-721 and https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Anderson-21759), he'll be connected to the tree.

Edited to add: His paternal grandmother is connected to the tree as well: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Tucker-24919
Awesome; thanks, Erin! I've connected them.

How about Elizabeth David https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gwynne-268.

Edit: oops, she is connected, just not marked as notable, so not sure of connection count.

Also, reaching into Europe, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bang-185 - listed into this article as just one of four early cookbook writers influencing food across Europe https://www.europeana.eu/en/blog/meet-the-women-who-taught-europe-to-cook

Edit: another oops, i forgot her name Anne Marie Mangor (1781 - 1865)
Thanks, Natasha.

I'd like to see Julia Child featured. I thought she was only a chef, but she also served with distinction in World War II and had a passion for genealogy.

by Mack Morrison G2G6 Mach 7 (78.1k points)
Chef Julia was already featured last years Food and Foodies. She has over 2,1029 connections. McWilliams-675 is her Wikitree profile
Thank you Anne. I didn't realized she was previously featured.
Thanks, Mack.

How about Paul Hollywood? He is a judge on the Great British Bake Off. He is connected on WT but only with a CC7 of 78 so far.

Discovered Ainsley Harriott is on wikitree https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Harriott-107 and he was on WDYTYA so there's a path to follow to get him connected.
by Natasha Houseman G2G6 Mach 2 (21.9k points)
Have now added his mother. It seems like there's further research completed on FamilySearch if anyone else wants to help me connect Ainsley in. (My Jamaican knowledge is sparse). I had the privilege of meeting him once when he supported a charity I was involved in and he was as lovely as his TV personality suggests.
Thanks, Natasha.

I was going to suggest Johnnie and Fanny Cradock, but they don't even have profiles yet!

Something else for me to work on...

by Stephen Corkey G2G6 Mach 2 (25.1k points)

Same goes for Keith Floyd.

Thanks, Stephen.

Mrs Beeton Isabella Mary (Mayson) Beeton (1836 - 1865) author of  Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management first published 1861 still in print.

Nigella Lawson she has a profile managed by the notables project but it needs a bio.

by Helen Ford G2G6 Pilot (475k points)

I was going to suggest Mrs Beeton, but it seemed like she had been in a previous challenge (from comments on her profile). I don't know what the procedure is around this, but have upvoted anyway!

Mrs Beeton seems last to have appeared in April 2021. There's precedent for being featured twice in under six months, so three years shouldn't be a bar.

Thanks, useful to know for future!
Thanks, Helen.

Craig Claiborne - Widely known American food critic and writer, and an LBGTQ notable. I just now added the Notables sticker to his profile.

James Beard - Restaurant critic known for the James Beard award, CC7=1195.

José Andrés - Spanish-born American restaurateur who founded World Central Kitchen, the food relief organization prominent in current news. I haven't figured out whether he has a WikiTree profile. He has a Wikipedia profile.

Margaret Fulton (1924–2019) Australia, food writer, journalist and presenter, CC7 59.

On behalf of the Australia Project and the Notables Project Diversity Team I would like to nominate the following iconic Australians;

Amy Schauer
Margaret Fulton
Maggie Beer
Bernard King - new profile, so not much in the way of biography yet, and we'll be working on getting him Connected in time (He falls under Diversity because he was openly gay in an era that still largely regarded such behaviour as illegal.)

by Melanie Paul G2G6 Pilot (423k points)
Bernard King is now connected (it should show by tomorrow).  There is a minimal bio (still needing some work), and I have yet to finish going through my mother's "celebrity" album to see if there are any decent images (found one very grainy one from an old newspaper, hoping for better).
Bernard now has a profile picture.
(I'm also hoping the connect-a-thon this weekend might see his cc7 grow a bit more.)
Thanks, Melanie.

For the Appalachia Project I suggest, Joseph Earl Dabney Sr (1929-2015) CC7=992

My personal suggestions are the following:

The always amusing Cajun Chef, Justin Elmer Wilson (1914-2001) CC7 = 1116.

Fellow Cajun, Paul Prudhomme (1940-2015), CC7 = 8559 !!!

Now I have to go add a profile for the man I would spend an hour with on Sunday afternoon tv, The Frugal Gourmet, Jeff Smith. ETA: found him. Jeffrey Lee Smith (1939-2004) No notables sticker so I don’t know his CC7. I will work on improving his profile.

Thanks, Donna.
According to family search, Jeff Smith descends on his father's side from George Soule of the Mayflower. That will certainly boost his CC7!
Thanks for that info!

I nominate Thomas John Edmonds who was a British-born New Zealand businessman and philanthropist, who created and manufactured Edmonds "Sure to Rise" baking powder and the Edmonds Cookery Book. He also financed the construction of several buildings in Christchurch, including gifting the city a band rotunda and clock tower in 1929. He was also ranked 45th in New Zealand's Top 100 History Makers.

His CC7 is currently 627

From the UK we also have Mary Berry another of our TV chefs and presenters.  Does Gordon Ramsay have a profile yet ?  He's well known in USA and UK !  I'll have a look

Is this him Living Ramsay born 1960's  It is - great.  Looking forward to working on this one.  He's with the Notables Project but has no connections at the moment.  Update 15 Apr -  I've managed to get his profile up to 58 connections but not been able to connect him to the tree.  Most lines lead back to Ireland.

Thanks, Maria!
Professionally known as Mary Berry, she is a chef, food writer and TV presenter. She is Dame Mary Rosa Alleyne Hunnings DBE, born 24 March 1935.

Mary's gggrandfather on her father's side, Robert Houghton, was a master baker in 1860s who provided bread for a local workhouse in Norwich. Her mother died in 2011 aged 105. At the age of 13, Mary Berry contracted polio and had to spend three months in the Claverton Down Isolation  Hospital.

Hi Abby - I can't tell if she currently has a profile or not.

My favourite tv chef was the wonderful Anthony Bourdain. His profile is connected, but with quite a low CC7 currently (37).

Antonin Carême would be an interesting pick as he was the first cook who was ever called "chef", listed the 5 "mother sauces" of French cuisine and is arguably the most influencial person in the history of Western food. Sadly he doesn't have a WT profile yet, and as he lived and died in Paris before 1860, I'm not sure how easy it would be to source and connect him.

Auguste Escoffier is regarded as his true heir and equivalent in the last 19th and early 20th century, and is probably a good part of why French cuisine is so renowned worldwide. Not connected yet but probably not that hard to.

La mère Poulard is another chef from the same era, and interestingly a female one (we're always lacking women in historical themes!); she was famous for her hospitality and her amazing omelettes.

Paul Bocuse is another great French chef known for excellency, but he doesn't have a profile yet and I'm not sure how creating him and family would go since he's much more recent (1926-2018.)

by Léa Haupaix G2G6 Mach 9 (97.0k points)
Note that those are "influencial" chefs but not "influencers" which is a modern concept; I don't know if that's what you're looking for, but honestly a cuisine-based theme without any French profiles would make me a bit sad

Erratum: Carême actually has a profile and is connected through his wife (I missed him because it was not referenced on Wikidata, I just changed that)

Updated: just connected Escoffier and added a picture. I will write a bio if he is picked.

Thanks, Lea. One of my favorites is French chef, Jacques Pepin, but from what I could see, he isn't on WikiTree yet.

Can any person, in the entire annals of human civilisation, be truly said to have been more influential in respect of the food we consume than Sotirios Panopoulos?

The man put pineapple - not fresh pineapple mind you - CANNED pineapple - on that most iconic of Italian dishes, the pizza.

Pineapple.

On a pizza.

Not only that but he actually found a market for it and turned his invention into a globally successful phenomenon.

I know he isn't connected and all that, but if that's not someone's definition of "influence" then I don't know what is.

by Stephen Corkey G2G6 Mach 2 (25.1k points)
I love this man!!!! My favorite pizza is ham and pineapple.  Thank you Sotirios Panopoulos!
Thanks, Stephen. All but one of our 7 person household is very happy he thought it up!
