Help us find and improve next week's Connection Finder profiles: Georgia Notables

Our current WikiTree Challenge is focused on notables from central Georgia (US) so we're looking at the folks they're working on in the Connection Finder, as well as a few others from the region like their bonus feature, baseball great, Jackie Robinson.

Here's who they've been working on:

Who else should we feature? We have room for 12 notables. We can't feature everyone who is nominated, but if we don't feature a profile you work on, we may use it sometime in the future. And, of course, all contributions help improve our shared tree.

Our choice of features will depend partly on the notable person's CC7, i.e. their connection count within seven degrees. The more connections they have, the more likely it is for all WikiTree members to find a close and interesting connection to them. So, if you nominate someone, please help grow their CC7.

We'll make a final decision on which ones to feature early next week.

Please reply here with what you're working on so that we don't duplicate our efforts. Thank you!

Take note that this is not the place to discuss why you think we shouldn't feature someone if those reasons are due to politics, actions, or opinions of those being suggested. Mentioning things like their not being connected, their biography still needing work, erroneous information, etc. are all suitable for discussion here and an opportunity to correct those situations.

Help us plan Connection Finder themes for 2023 here.

Since you specified central (or middle) Georgia, it might be helpful to folks to have a list of those counties you wish included. The list can vary a bit depending on who is making the determination, but definitely does not include Atlanta area counties which are considered in north Georgia. Here is a link to the Wikipedia page which can help folks make a determination whether their nominee qualifies as having been born or lived in central Georgia: Central Georgia

Hi Nelda,

The Challenge is working specifically on certain counties, but for this post, anyone from Georgia state works.
Thanks for the clarification, Abby.

19th Century actress Mary Germon.

Theater, television, and film actor Stacy Keach.

Doctor who first used anesthesia in surgery and one of two Georgia representatives in the National Statuary Hall, Crawford Long. (CC7 = 14,383)

See my comment above re counties in central Georgia. The cities of Savannah and Augusta and Madison County are not part of central Georgia.

Abby says anyone from Georgia will be okay.

Thanks, Russell.

Richard Wayne Penniman ("Little Richard") - musician, born in Macon, GA.

Sidney Clopton Lanier - poet, born in Macon, GA.

Flannery O'Connor - author, lived in Milledgeville, Baldwin County, Georgia from the age of 15. Her WikiTree profile needs major work. All it has is a link to her Wikipedia page and an image. Edit: I have added sources and have a fairly full biography for her, but if anyone wants to add anything, feel free.

Little Richard's CC7=32

Sidney Lanier has CC7=1369

Flannery O'Connor is unconnected
Ellen, I am getting nowhere fast on finding a path to connect Fannery O'Connor to the WikiTree tree. Is that necessary for this? I'm sure eventually she will be connected, just not sure it will be anytime soon.
Flannery O'Connor was an only child and never married. I added all four of her grandparents this afternoon. If anyone else wants to start working on her uncles/aunts/cousins trying to get her connected, that would be great.
I love that you suggested Sidney Lanier

Nelda,

The answer to your question about whether it is necessary to connect for this is yes.  The individuals who are selected will be featured next week must be connected. The reason that connection is a requirement is that if someone is unconnected to the main Wikitree, others who are connected will be unable to know how closely connected to those who are selected.

As an example, see the G2G post of Which Steven King actor are you most closely connected to?

Russell, that makes absolute sense! I should have thought of that. Unfortunately, I haven't had time to connect her.
Thanks, Nelda. Flannery is a favorite author of mine, so I'm sad she can't be part of the list this week, but with all the time you've put into her bio, I'll take a stab at her connection so hopefully she can be used in the future.
Thanks, Abby.

Jimmy Carter - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Carter-1086 - a Georgian with lots of connections

CC7 is >1,000 (CC6 is 872). I do not see the exact count displayed on his profile, probably because the profile is not marked as "Notable."  Seems to me that the display of CC7 on Notables profiles could be extended include profiles with the project boxes of the US Presidents project, the European Royals and Aristocrats project, and possibly others -- as projects whose subjects can be implicitly assumed to be notable.
Someone from the managing project just needs to add a Notables sticker and the CC7 count will show
It seems silly to put a sticker on the profile to.say "this person is notable" when the profile is emblazoned with other indications of their notability. Of the only reason to add the sticker is to allow display of their CC7 count, that can be done far more efficiently by changing the coding for CC7 display to include project boxes that are unambiguously associated with notabilty.
I added the sticker, but also ran the numbers and his CC7 is 2346 as of this morning.

Thanks for the suggestion, Roger.

Thanks, Frank.

Joel Chandler Harris, compiler of "Uncle Remus Stories." An iconic figure in cultural history of Georgia. Now somewhat controversial because he was a white man who published African-American folk stories, but his motivation was honest and his word helped preserve the folk tradition.

Nice biography, but no image yet. CC7=375.

Edited: I just uploaded a portrait of him.

Fantastic choices.  I was going to recommend a few that you just did. :)

As the person responsible for her profile, Hedy West was one of the people that came to mind, but I'd held off because she'd been featured before... I only just realized that that was two years ago... my how time flies.
Doesn’t it just! I wasn’t a WTer 2 years ago so I didn’t know her feature history. Others should know about her though!
Thanks, Donna.
