I have done extensive research with much help from cousins but would like to go deeper into his genealogy. I am unable to find his obituary but maybe I missed something? Also who was his first wife her name? He had daughters his sister (from the family stories) adopted out? He was a civil war veteran and maybe we can go just a bit deeper into the French side of the family tree and his New York roots.

Thank you

Note: He is my great great grandfather

Have you tried these NY Sources:

In 1860 his residence is listed as Olean, Cattaraugus County, NY. I need to look here to go further. I’ll check into the sources there

I already looked and didn't find anything. I did find reference to him in Michigan and working in a saloon:

Some Manistee County Gazetteer Names (rootsweb.com)

These people were buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, also known as Olean Cemetery. It seems to be a different Joseph, but he was also born in Canada. If Harriet were your Joseph's wife, then he would have had to abandon her and go to Michigan to marry Matilda. Seems a stretch, but stranger things have happened.

SIMPIER, Caroline J. Died, Oct. 8, 1875 age, 18 b. Olean, NY
SIMPIER, Harriet N. Died, Nov. 26, 1899 age, 65 b. Farmers Valley, NY
SIMPIER, Joseph Died, July 7, 1876 age, 56 b. Canada

Thank you I was having a hard time finding anything about him. This helps. Somehow they are related. He did own a saloon. Interesting will have to research this group

I share an alleged Cattaraugus County relative.  Mine is Charity Hovey, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hovey-2409 , She appears, apparently having left no record, as follows: In biography of Ambrose Booth, "He married Charity G. Hovey of Cattaraugus County." Gazetteer and Biographical Record of Genesee County, New York, Edited by: F. W. Beers, J.W. Vose & Co., Publishers, Syracuse, N. Y. 1890, http://genesee.nygenweb.net/History/Gazetteer_and_biographical_record_Genesee_County_NY.pdf, pg 364 . Cattaraugus County records seem thin on the ground, for the 1850's.  As it happens, my mom was born in Olean,

BTW, that's a wonderful profile, Andrew.

Thank you yes

That’s a good source couldn’t find anybody with his surname but will definitely use this in future genealogy research laugh
