Thomas Grant is a part of US Black heritage.

Thomas Grant was born in Saratoga County about 1805-1808. He was the son of Jehu Unknown and Dinah Unknown. Thomas is accounted for in the 1820 U.S. Census household of his father, Jehu, in Milton, New York as a Free Colored Person, Males, Under 14.[1]

Thomas also appears to be accounted for in the 1830 U.S. Census of his brother William Grant in that year within the two (2) "Free Colored Persons - Males - 10 thru 23" or the two (2) "Free Colored Persons - Males - 24 thru 35." [2]

Thomas married Julia E. (Unknown) Grant sometime prior to 1840.

In the 1840 U.S. Census, Thomas was the head of household in Saratoga Springs, Saratoga County, New York with the following persons in his household: "Free Colored Persons - Males - Under 10 - 1 Free Colored Persons - Males - 24 thru 35 - 1 Free Colored Persons - Females - 24 thru 35 - 1 Persons Employed in Agriculture - 1 Total Free Colored Persons - 3 Total All Persons - Free White, Free Colored ,Slaves - 3." [3]

In the 1850 U.S. Census, Thomas (age 42) is working as a Laborer living in Malta, Saratoga County, New York with his wife Julia E. and son Elias.[4]

In the 1855 N.Y. Census, Thomas is living with his wife Julia and his sons Elias and Hyram in Milton, Saratoga County, New York. [5]

In the 1860 U.S. Census, Thomas (age 43), is working as a Laborer and was the head of household in Greenfield, Saratoga County, New York living with his wife Julia and his sister Jane Grant.[6]

In the 1865 N.Y. Census, Thomas was the head of household working in farming and living alone in Saratoga Springs, New York.[7]

In the 1875 N.Y. Census, Thomas was the head of household living alone and working as a Laborer in Saratoga Springs, New York.[8]

Thomas appears to have passed away in Saratoga Springs, New York on February 21, 1882 and listed as 76 years old at the time of his death. [9]

Research Notes

Death date cannot be verified as same person without additional information on death or burial, etc. This Thomas Grant is not listed on the 1880 U.S. Census, the only other Thomas Grant listed on it is 10 years old/white.
