Biography

US Black Heritage Project
William Grant is a part of US Black heritage.

William Grant was born about 1803 -1810 in Saratoga County, New York, most probably in the Town of Milton. He was the son of Jehu Unknown and Dinah Unknown.

Depending on his actual date of birth (unknown), William is accounted for in the 1820 U.S. Census household of his father, Jehu, in Milton, New York either as a Free Colored Person, Males, Under 14 or, more likely, as Jehu's one son listed as a Free Colored Persons - Males - 14 thru 25. [1]

In the 1830 U.S. Census William was head of household in Milton, New York accounting for his parents Jehu and Dinah and his siblings. It is unclear whether this census record reflects his wife Julia A. (Perdun) Grant as part of his household at the time rather than one of his sisters .[2]

By the time of the 1840 U.S. Census, William is again heading the household in Milton, New York. Based on age, this record accounts for William's parents, his wife Julia A. (Perdun) Grant and two female children. [3]

In the 1850 U.S. Census, William (age 40) was in Milton, New York, living with his wife Julia and three daughters. [4]

In the 1855 N.Y. Census William (age 52) was the head of household in Milton, New York, United States living with his wife Julia, his mother Dinah (aka Diana), two daughters and a boarder. [5]

In 1860, the U.S. Census shows William (age 55), working as a Farmer living in Milton, New York living with his wife Julia, his mother Diana (aka Dinah), his son William and his brother in law Alexander Perdun.[6]

William Grant last appears in any census record in the 1865 N.Y. Census. In this record, he is head of household in Milton, New York living with his wife Julia, a grandson and a boarder who shares his wife's maiden name of Perdun (sp).[7]

William passed away sometime between the 1865 and 1870 U. S. Census. After this time, his wife Julia is listed as widowed. William's place of burial is unknown but believed to be somewhere in or around the vicinity of Milton, New York.
