Biography

Elias Grant is a part of US Black heritage.

Elias Grant was born in Saratoga County, New York about 1831. He was the son of Thomas Grant and Julia E. (Unknown) Grant.

At the time of the 1850 U.S. Census and the following 1855 New York Census, Elias was single, working as a Boatman and living with his parents. In 1850, Elias and his family made their home in Malta, Saratoga County, New York. By 1855, they had moved to Wilton, in northern Saratoga County, New York. ^[1][2]

In the 1865 New York Census, Elias was the married head of household in Saratoga Springs, New York.^[3]

By the time of the 1870 U.S. Census, Elias (age 39), is married to Olive (listed as Olive Allen) working as a Laborer and living in Saratoga Springs, New York.^[4]

In the 1875 New York Census, Elias is still living in Saratoga Springs, New York with wife Olive and daughter Jennie (age 1). ^[5]

In the 1880 U.S. Census, Elias (age 48), is working as a Day Laborer living with wife Olive and daughter Jennie in Saratoga Springs, New York. States.^[6]

Elias was admitted to the Saratoga County Infirmary/Almshouse in Milton, New York on October 14, 1898. ^[7]

At the time of the 1900 U.S. Census, Elias is still living in the Saratoga County Infirmary/Almshouse in Milton New York.^[8]

Elias passed away on April 30, 1903 in Milton, New York. According to his obituary, he passed away at the Saratoga County Infirmary (Almshouse) and was also buried there in the Infirmary Cemetery. ^[9][10]

Research Notes

Elias is incorrectly listed as widowed on the 1900 U.S. Census from the County Infirmary/Almshouse. This matches the information on his admission card from 1898 stating the same and that he was "S.S." - self-supporting. His age on his admission card is listed as 73 years old. The 1900 U.S. Census record lists his birthdate as May 1825 which differs from other records with most stating birth about 1831. His admission card correctly lists one living child - attributed to his daughter, Jennie. Elias' wife, Olive, began re-using the surname Alexander, from her first marriage, in records as early as 1900. Olive passed away in 1931 and was listed as Olive Grant, widow of Elias Grant, at the time of her death.
