"Unknown" is currently assumed to have been born about 1782 to Patrick Junkine and Mary Buchanan.[1] BUT he may fit with any male in Patrick's extended family around in the right place and timeframe to have "met" Margaret McEwan.
Research notes
Where does the male Jenkins who has to have "met" Margaret (McEwan) Henderson (abt.1782-aft.1828) around 1812, belong in the Jenkins families?
James Henderson (1813-1892) BigY tested descendants who confirm the yDNA signature for James (three 2nd and 3rd cousins), do not match the tested descendant of James' brother Archibald, who does match several lines of Henderson families from the Perthshire / Stirlingshire area
But they do have an exact match to a BigY tested descendant of Peter (Junkine) Jenkins (1818-1881). Originally assigned to the same haplogroup, R-BY19859, under which the three cousins above now have their own James descendant subgroup.
For current, ongoing updated info as more testers join, check out FTDNA Discover).
As at Sep 2023 we are waiting for BigY results from a Stirlingshire line around the right timeframe and place. Preliminary indications from ySTR testing show matches to the existing testers on this Perthshire line, but more distantly, so likely connected a further 100 or so years back from Patrick's ancestor James born about 1680.
yDNA
Further clarification on where the actual connection may be, will ensue the more Junkine / Jenkins etc families from Perthshire / Stirlingshire venture into yDNA testing. (We are getting at the outer reaches for autosomal matches here)
If you are a direct male line descendant of any of these Perthshire/Stirlingshire families, but in particular of James (Junken) Junkine (abt.1680-), on another line than down from grandson Patrick, please do get in touch.
We would very much like to learn more about which families connect where.
There is a Jenkins Surname yDNA project on FamilyTreeDNA.
The basic y37 test should provide a set of surname matches but the timeframes and exact positioning on the tree of Jenkins-kind needs the more advance BigY testing.
A subsidy may well be available (contact Lorna to discuss).

Autosomal DNA matches also exist across the two families.
