Biography
Tibby Evans lived in Awamoko, Otago, New Zealand.
Eyre (known as Tibby) was born on 13 June 1874[1] at Awamoko, Otago, New Zealand, and his birth was registered in the second quarter of 1874 at Ōamaru[2]. He was the second son of Eyre Evans and Charlotte Lees.
In 1896 he was a miller living at Hull street with his brother Lloyd a labourer, both being registered on the Ōamaru Electoral Roll[3]. Also on that Roll were his grandfather George, a gentleman living at Reed Street, his uncle George, a horse trainer living in Ōamaru, and his brother Percy, a compositor living at Aln Street.
He served in the 7th Contingent of the Anglo-Boer War[4] enlisting on 3 April 1901 at Waitaki, Otago (Service Number: SA4522)[5]. His next-of-kin was his father Eyre Evans. He was a farm hand living at Wharfe Street, Ōamaru. He served as a trooper[6].
By 1911 he had moved to Ngapara, being registered on the Waitaki Supplementary Electoral Roll[7]. He was working for the Milligan Brothers, General Merchants and Flour Millers[8].
He was on the New Zealand Army Reserve Roll 1st Division in World War I from 1916[9]. He was a miller at Ngapara, Waitaki, North Otago.
In 1919 he was a flour miller living at 10A Hull Street, Ōamaru, being registered on the Ōamaru General Electoral Roll[10]. His father Eyre (a clerk) and half-brother Thomas (a painter) were at 74 Tees Street, and Uncle George Maurice was a horse trainer at Pukeuri Junction.
He never married and had no known children.
Tibby died on 25 October 1944[11] at the residence of his brother Percy, 37 Nelson Street, Wanganui[12]. Members of the South African Veterans' Association were requested to attend his funeral. He was buried in Aramoho Cemetery, Whanganui, Block D Row 1 Plot 42[13].
