Biography

Ethel was born on 31 December 1868[1] at Awamoko, Otago, New Zealand. She was the first daughter of Eyre Evans and Charlotte Lees.

She married Robert Milligan on 31 December 1890[2] at Ōamaru, Otago. They did not have any children.

Ethel was listed on the 1893 Ōamaru Electoral Roll as living at Humber Street, Oamaru[3], as was her husband, Robert, a grocer. By 1899 she and her husband had moved to Eden Street[4]. She had moved again by 1911 to 13 Wharfe Street[5]. They were at the same address in 1919[6].

But by 1922, Ethel was living at Wansbeck Street[7] while her husband was still living at Wharfe Street with Annie and Mary Milligan, both spinsters. Her husband divorced her in 1923 at the Dunedin Supreme Court[8]. The decree absolute was granted on 12 December by Mr Justice Sim[9].

She was still living at Wansbeck Street in 1946, being on the Ōamaru General Electoral Roll[10].

Ethel died on 29 March 1948 aged 79 years[11]. She was buried in Ōamaru Old Cemetery, Ōamaru, Block 103, Plot 6 Presbyterian[12]. Her life was remembered in an obituary in the Otago Daily Times[13]. She was stated to be of a "kindly disposition" and gave "willing cooperation in anything that made for the welfare of the town'. She was survived by her sister Eva James and three brothers, Percy, Savage Corry and Eric.
