Savage Corry (known as Toss or Stanley) was born on 5 January 1878[1] at Ōamaru, Otago, New Zealand, and his birth was registered in the first quarter of 1878 at Ōamaru[2]. He was the fifth son of Eyre Evans and Charlotte Lees.
He married Jane Ann Healey on 26 December 1902[3]. They had four children.
In 1914 he was a baker living at High Street, Waimate with his wife Jane, both being listed on the Waitaki Supplementary Electoral Roll[9].
When he was listed on the World War I Army Nominal Roll Volume 1 for 15 August 1914 to 31 December 1915[10], he was still living at Waimate, Canterbury, and his wife was his next of kin. He became a trooper in the Sixth Reinforcements of the Canterbury Mounted Rifles (Service number WWI 7/1226)[11]. He embarked on the Tofua.
He enlisted again on 25 November 1919[12]. So, in 1919 he was a soldier living at Trentham Military Camp, Upper Hutt and listed on the Hutt General Electoral Roll[13].
He divorced his wife Jane in 1920[14]. The case was heard before His Honour Sir John Salmond in the Wellington Supreme Court on 20 May[15]. The evidence was that his wife had declined to live with him after he returned from the War in 1918. She had bought a house and furniture from money she had received from him. The grounds for a divorce was desertion. The case was adjourned and heard the following week in camera on 27 May[16]. The judgement was delivered on 7 June by the Judge[17], and a decree nisi was granted, to be made absolute in three months. The custody of the children was granted to him.
After he left the Army, he settled in Upper Hutt and became a confectioner, being listed on the 1922 Otaki General Electoral Roll[18]. His uncle George Maurice, also a confectioner, was on that Roll living at Main Street, Upper Hutt. He had moved to Wellington in 1925 and was a caterer living at 122 Alexander Street, Miramar, being listed on the Wellington Suburbs General Electoral Roll[19]. Uncle George was still living with him, now retired.
By 1928 he had moved to 122 Lang Street, Wellington East and was listed on the Wellington East General Electoral Roll[21]. His uncle George was still living with him. His wife Madeleine Isabel was listed on the Supplementary Electoral Roll.
He emigrated to England from Wellington on the Ruahine, arriving on 31 May 1932 at London[22]. His wife sailed to England later, leaving on 18 February 1933 on the Kemuera for London[23], sailing in tourist class[24]. But at some stage she went to New South Wales, Australia.
In 1939 he was living at Linden Hall, Lonsdale Road, Berwick Carnforth, Lancashire with his daughters, Kathleen and Sylvia[25]. This was the residence of his married daughter Nina Corry Briggs[26]. He was living on private means. Frank Williams, a schoolmaster, and his family were also living there.
His wife Alicia died in New South Wales on 20 April 1957[27]. A few months later in the third quarter of 1957 he married for the third time to Lilian Amelia Fair[28].
Toss (Stanley) died on 1 May 1968, and his death was registered in the second quarter of 1968 at Surrey[29].
