Biography

Gordon Agnew was born about 1856, probably at Drummaul parish, County Antrim, Ireland. He is believed to be the son of Robert Agnew and Mary Ewing of Drummaul parish.

Gordon Agnew emigrated to New Zealand in 1876 as part of an Assisted Immigration programme. He sailed from England on the "Oxford" on 27 Nov 1876 and arrived at Auckland on 1 March 1877. He was listed as a Farm Labourer from County Antrim.[1] He settled in Tairua, Coromandel, and ran a store there.

Gordon Agnew married Letitia Morrison in 1879.[2] They are believed to have had 7 children between 1881 and 1900 although only 4 births are listed in the New Zealand Birth registers. Gordon also had as many as 13 children with Letitia's sister Ellen Morrison between 1890 and 1910.[3]

Gordon Agnew died on 11 Jan 1911 aged 53 at Hikuai.[4] His probate records show he made a very short will on 8 Jan 1911 leaving all of his possessions to Ellen Morrison.[5]
