Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
James Veatch Jr was a Maryland colonist.

James was born at Beall's Pasture, Prince Georges County, Maryland on 25 May 1725.

He removed to Rowan County, North Carolina about 1769 and later moved to Kershaw County, South Carolina. [1]

Marriage

James married Elizabeth Raymer in Maryland in 1751. She reportedly died at the Nolichucky Settlement in Greene County, Tennessee, where their son Nathan lived prior to moving to Indiana. He had fought in the Battle of Kings Mountain while living in Tennessee.

Military

James served with the South Carolina troops in the Revolutionary War from Kershaw County, South Carolina. James fought in Captain Richard Tucker's Company. "He fought in the Battle of Camden, South Carolina on 16 Aug 1780, receiving wounds from which he later died on 29 Oct 1780. Some researchers have stated that he died a prisoner of war in the hands of the British while others have stated that "he was set free because of injuries. The British did not care for him, and he thus died.[2] James and Elizabeth's son, Isaac Veatch (25 Aug 1756-18 Aug 1780), died two days after the Battle of Camden, of wounds sustained in that battle.

Death

James Veatch lived two more months and died Oct. 29, 1780, also supposedly of wounds sustained in the battle. Gen. James Clifford Veatch, a great-grandson of James and grand-nephew of this Isaac Veatch, "was born near Elizabeth, Indiana, in 1819. His father, Isaac Veatch, was a member of the Indiana House of Representatives from 1827-28. He died of cholera in July 1833. His grandfather Nathan Veatch fought in the American Revolution at the Battle of King's Mountain as a lieutenant of Tennessee Volunteers. His great-grandfather James Veatch fought, was wounded, and died of his wounds in the American Revolution at the Battle of Camden."

Veatch-395 and Veatch-29 appear to represent the same person because: Same wife and son, same dates and places of birth, marriage, and death.
