Stated at Ancestry.com, without the reasoning behind the assertion: He may be descended from Samuel and Mary (Dawes) Spencer.

From Carlee Lawless at Ancestry.com: Samuel served in the War of 1812 from Westmoreland Co VA. [I doubt this. KP] He was said to have moved from Prince Edward Co VA to Barren Co KY in 1810, or thereabouts, at least by 1817. Oldest child, Samuel, born 21 Mar 1798, may have married a Miss Walker. Nine more children: John H, Nancy, Lucinda, William, James, Daniel, Elizabeth, Mildred, and George Madison. The later born 28 May 1817 in Glasgow KY. Samuel's father and brother moved on to Ohio. Samuel died before 1841 in Glasgow, KY. [This contradicts the fact that Samuel was married in 1797 in Barren Co KY. KP]

Ancestry.com: Samuel joined the Army just before Cornwallis surrendered. He was a descendant of the old Anglo Saxon stock. Tall, thin, blue eyes, fair skin and light brown, straight hair. (Copied from info sheet received from Audra Smith - her ... sources were the Spencer Family Bible and "Some Early Marriages in Virginia."). [Impossible since he was born in 1772. KP]

Ancestry.com: son of Joseph Spencer, according to Spencer Bible Records, contributed by Mrs. NB Hedges, 317 Albany Road, Lexington, KY.

These are probably granddaughters' marriages:
SPENCER, Malvina to BROADY, Joseph, 24 Dec 1845
SPENCER, Susan A to BROADDY, James, 23 Nov 1848

Note the following:
1) He was said to have been in Barren Co KY in 1797 [probably not],
2) There was a Moses Spencer in Barren Co KY in 1810,
3) There was a different Moses Spencer, born ca 1752 in Henry Co VA in 1840.
