Research Notes

Parents and brothers attached here are speculative.
Was she a stepmother? Was she with John Spencer family in 1810?
Her 1850 census said she was born VA; in 1880, son William said KY, son George said TN, daughter Nancy Ann said KY, and daughter Minerva said VA in 1880 and TN in 1900.
There was a John Spencer in 1820 Wayne Co KY, p 94, 000001/33110. That's a lot of daughters.
Another John Spencer was on the same page as Phillip Huff in 1830: 00110001/0001001. He was born in the 1770s, before ca 1775, and was probably too young to have been our Hannah's father.
Was this the same man? If so, two younger men were not at home in 1820 or hired men or grandsons. He does not fit any of the family groups as shown at gedcoms at Ancestry.com.
Genforum and many people on the Internet say she was a daughter of Nathan and Ann (Smith) Spencer or of Nathan and Hannah (Loofborough) Spencer, but Spencer researchers deny it. Evelyn Avery wrote, "Nathan Spencer Sr and Hannah Loofboorough did have a daughter Hannah. She was born 26 Mar 1770 and married Isaac Burson. In the Spencer book written by Jenkins, he publishes a letter written by Hannah Spencer Burson to her cousin Sarah Evans in PA, written in 1822. Hannah is living in Jefferson Co, Short Creek MM, OH. She tells where all her brothers and sisters are living at that time [1822] and a little about the lives of each of them. Nathan Spencer Sr's daughter Hannah did not marry Phillip Huff."
She also wrote, "Hannah is not the daughter of Nathan Spencer and Ann Smith. Nathan was a Quaker, and every time any of them move, they get a certificate of transfer from the church to the one they are going to where they will go. The certificate lists their children, as well as the recording births and deaths of the family in their records. He did not name a daughter Hannah, even though that was his mother's name. Also, this family line is well done in the Spencer book by Jenkins called: Samuel Spencer. Also, Nathan's daughter-in-law wrote a family genealogy out for her daugher giving date of birth, marriage, places of burial etc for the family, a copy of which I found. She did not included a Hannah. In 1806, Nathan went from Loudoun Co VA to Belmont Co OH."
I also identified the Hannah Spencer, daughter of John and Lydia (Phillips) Huff, born 7 Apr 1783 in Round Hill, Loudoun Co VA, as Mrs Aaron Patterson of Belmont Co OH.
The late Robert A Huff, Albany KY, researcher for a different Huff family in the Clinton County, Kentucky area, may have identified her as Hannah Wright. Her daughter-in-law's first husband was a Wright.
A 1991 letter from Edith Waddell Quinn, R #1 Box 466, Glenn CA 95943, stated the mother of Sarah Catherine Huff, that is, the wife of Philip Huff, was Marie Jackson, daughter of Isaac and Eliza (Howell) Jackson. One gedcoms at Ancestry.com has this Marie, with the same parents, b 1804 Buchanan Co WV, and Granville Hough's Vol. IV identifies which Philip was her husband.

It is extremely unlikely that a woman whose father was a doctor in Connecticut should marry a very poor man in Tennessee or Kentucky by 1810. These is a lot of confusion over various Philip Huff, whose son was he? and his wife Hannah Spencer. Until a clear source contemporary with this couple's lives is located, all putative parents are speculative and should not be to wither of them. The perils of the Internet!

By the way, the Research Notes included here were written by me, and I'd appreciate being identified.
