Charles Stiles[1] Reed was born about 1813-1814 in Ashford[2][3][4], Ashfield[5], Ashland[6], or Pomfret[7], Connecticut[8][3][4] or Massachusetts[9] or Rhode Island[1], definitely New England[1]. He was the child of Phebe[10] (maybe Brooks[6]) and William[10][6] Reed, the husband of Melissa "Malisey" Newport[9] and Elizabeth[3][10], and the father of Civil War veterans Charles E. Reed and Joseph W. Reed of the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. His father was born in Virginia[3] and his mother was born in Rhode Island[3].
1865: Leicester, Massachusetts (widowed) with his children[8]
1850: Sterling, Massachusetts with his wife Malisey and children[9]
1840: Barre, Massachusetts with 7 other free colored persons: 1 woman aged 24-35 (presumably his wife Malisey), 2 girls / young women aged 10-23 years old (presumably Laura and perhaps an older sister who doesn't appear in the 1850 census?), 3 girls under age 10 (Louisa, Lucretia, & Zilpha), and 1 boy under age 10 (presumably Joseph)[11]
Research Notes
Raymoure-1 21:35, 28 May 2020 (UTC): The Holbrook Research Institute[10] and New England Historic Genealogical Society[6] transcriptions of marriage records differ for who he married in 1873; the Holbrook one seems to be the more accurate of the two based on the 1880 federal census record but there are more details in the NEHGS record. Oy!
Holbrook: Charles Reed, c. Phebe and William Reed, m. Elizabeth unk., age unk., parents unk., b. Richmond, race unk.
vs.
NEHGS: Charles Reed, c. Elizabeth (perhaps wife's name confused with mother's name in original record?) and William Reed, m. Phebe Brooks (perhaps his mother's name?), age 50, parents unk., b. Richmond, race Black
Possible birth record? Off by a decade of the 1850 estimate, but possible.
Reed, Charles, s. Polly & William, b. 28 January 1823 Sterling
Raymoure-1 21:26, 28 May 2020 (UTC): Father's name confirmed as William in his marriage record to Elizabeth. Was Polly also a nickname for Phebe?
