John Poor was born in 1775 to Joseph Poor and Margaret Boynton Bailey in Rowley, MA.^[1]

John married Hannah Chute, in 1797. They had registered their marriage intentions on 20 Oct. 1797.^[2][3] John was a cordwainer.

While four of John's older brothers had moved to new horizons further north (Samuel and George in Goffstown, NH, and Jesse and Job in Berlin, VT), John and Hannah decided to move even further north to Salisbury, NH, arriving there in 1798. They only stayed there from March 1798 to August 1799, during which time they had a first child Amanda, who died young. Next they settled for about a year back in Massachusetts, specifically in Reading, MA where Hannah's uncle Daniel Chute lived at the time. Their second child was born in Reading. In 1801, they purchased a home from Rev. Elijah Parish, near the Byfield church, but on the Newbury side. Seven children were born in this place through 1815. Altogether, the following were their children:

9. Harriet, b. 27 Aug. 1815; m. William H. Houghton
10. John, b. 1 Feb. 1818; and
11. Amelia Parish, b. 21 Aug. 1820; m. John Dewitt.

In the fall of 1816, John and Hannah decided to head west. The long journey with eight children was split with a stay in Pittsburgh, PA in 1817. About two months after their son John was born there, the family headed down the Ohio river towards Cincinnati, where two of Hannah's brothers had been living for about 10 years. They then continued as far as Madison, in Jefferson County of Indiana, where they bought land 40 miles west of Madison and built a log cabin. Barely weeks from moving in to their cabin, in Washington County, on 2 Oct. 1819, John died suddenly on 9 Dec. 1819. His youngest child was born 9 months later.

Heroically, Hannah decided to remain there, appearing on the 1820 census living with eight children.
