Benjamin Hageman Nevius was born on June 29, 1803, in Six Mile Run, New Jersey, his father,John Nevius and his mother,Gertrude Hagerman. He married Mary Denton on November 30, 1826, in Ovid, New York. He died as a young father on October 10, 1830, in Ovid, New York, at the age of 27, and was buried in Ovid Union Cemetery, Ovid, Seneca County, New York.
