REV. DR. NEVIUS DEAD.
HE DIED VERY SUDDENLY AT HIS HOME IN CHINA.
News has just been received at Ovid of the death of Rev. John L. Nevius, D. D., which occurred at his home in Cheefoo, China, October 19th. The information came from missionary headquarters in New York, no news having arrived from Mrs. Nevius. The letter says:

“He attended prayers with his family and with the Chinese who were accustomed to gather there each morning for devotions, and sat talking with his physician when about 10.30 A. M. he rose up and said to his doctor ‘come up stairs,’ but he himself fell immediately and died in less than five minutes. He had been planning to start in a day or two for a journey into the interior to attend the missionary meeting, expecting to travel about two hundred miles with his wheelbarrow, and this shows he considered himself fairly well. He had at prayers read from I Thessalonians 2:10-20, and expounded it to his Chinese spiritual children. – This seems a wonderfully appropriate farewell message for him to have given them ere he was translated to the world above.”

Rev. Dr. Nevius was born March 4, 1829, and had spent 40 years as a missionary in China, having first sailed for that country Sept. 19th, 1853. His wife was a daughter of the late Dr. C. C. Coan of Ovid.
