Biography

Helen Sanford Coan was born on January 6, 1833, in Ovid, New York, her father, Claudius Collins Coan and her mother, Sarah Maria Folwell. She married John Livingston Nevius on June 15, 1853, in Ovid, Seneca, New York. She died about 1910 in Yantai, Shandong, China and was buried in Chefoo Temple Hill Cemetery, Yantai, Shandong, China.

At the Hermitage, Ovid, on the morning of the 15th inst., by Rev. A. B. Dunlap, Rev. John L. Nevius, Missionary to Ningpo, China, and Helen Sandford, daughter of Dr. C. C. Coan.

Reveille: Mrs. Helen Nevius, wife of Rev. John L. Nevius, D. D., and daughter of the late Dr. C. C. Coan, is well know[n], as is also Dr. Nevius, as a missionary and an author. Mrs. Nevius’ “Our Life in China,” and Dr. Nevius’ “China and the Chinese,” are published by Harper & Bros., and deserve a wide circulation.

Mrs. John L. Nevius died, June 22, at her home in Chefoo, China. For 59 years she has been a missionary to that country. Her husband died 17 years ago. She was a daughter of the late Dr. C. C. Coan, of this town.
