During the War of 1812, Thomas Macklem served as a private in the 1st York Militia.

He served against the United States under P. Robinson's Rifle Company. He was at the Capture of Detroit, Michigan on 16 Aug 1812. [5]

From Oct. 25, 1812 to Dec. 30, 1812, he served in Captain Peter Robinson’s Company and from Dec. 31st to Jan. 24, 1813, in the King’s Works. [6]

Sometime between Sept. 1, 1813 and June 24, 1814, he had apprehended and transported deserters to justice. [7]

From Sept. 25 to Oct. 3, 1813, he served in Capt. James Fenwick’s Co. [8]

From Oct. 15 to Nov. 17, 1813, he served at York in Capt. Reuben Richardson’s Co. [9]

From July 8 to 27, 1814, he served in Capt. James Fenwick’s Co. [10]

On 26 Mar 1817, Thomas leases lot 5, concession 5 in Whitchurch, Upper Canada (Ontario) as his first transaction for this 100 acres. This piece of land may or may not have eventually been owned by Thomas. [11]

On 24 Mar 1819, Thomas signs the Loyalist Oath of Allegiance to Canada. [12] That same day, he petitioned to be granted land in Whitchurch, Canada West (Ontario).[13]

On Sept. 2, 1824, Thomas Macklem, a farmer of Whitchurch Twp. and a former private in Capt. Robinson’s Rifle Co. of the 1st York Militia, received 100 acres in the Talbot Settlement. [14]

On 29 May 1829 he purchased the west half of lot 9, concession 6 in Whitchurch, Upper Canada (Ontario), as his first transaction for this 50 acres. [15] The original survey map of Whitchurch Township shows a Thomas Macklem on the west half of lot 9, concession 6.[16]

The 1837 Toronto and Home District Directory shows a Thomas Macklam living at lot 2, concession 5, Whitchurch Township.[17] This may have been transferred to him by his father William at some point.

After his father, William, died in December 1844, Thomas possibly inherited 50 acres from him; the east half of lot 2, concession 5, in Whitchurch, Upper Canada (Ontario). (He may have purchased it from him instead.) The the original survey map of Whitchurch (as later recorded in 1857) shows a Thomas Macklem on this lot. [16] However, land records show that it was originally purchased by William as of 1829.[18]

Thomas died 17 January 1847 in Whitchurch Twp, York, Canada West. He is buried in Dickson Hill Cemetery, Dickson Hill, York Regional Municipality, Ontario.[1]
