Biography

William Macklem was born 17 Apr 1802 in Pennsylvania, United States. He was the son of William Macklem "the Elder" and Ann Hastings.[1]

On 29 Jun 1802 (as an infant) he arrives in York, Canada with his parents and six siblings.[2]

On 11 Feb 1822, he married Elizabeth Rymal in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada.[3] Their children are

William signed the Loyalist Oath of Allegiance to Canada on 24 Mar 1819 in Whitchurch, York, Upper Canada (Ontario).[4] That same day, he petitioned to be granted land there.[5] Two days earlier, P. Robinson attested to the good character of William and his brother John.[6]

On the 1851 census of Barton, Wentworth, Canada West, he is a farmer (religion A. Presbyterian) living in a 1.5 story frame house with his wife, five daughters, two sons, and a laborer.[7]

On the 1861 census of Barton, Wentworth, Canada West, he is living with his wife and six of their children.[8]

On the 1861 census of Barton, he is widowed and living with two daughters.[9]

William died 26 Sep 1893 in Wentworth, Ontario, Canada.[10] He is buried nearby in Barton Stone United Church and Cemetery, Hamilton-Wentworth Registration District.[1]

That your petitioner having Conducted himself as a good and faithful subject of His Majesty, and not being called on to do duty as being under Age during the late War, and not having heretofore received any Land from Government, he therefore humbly beseech your Excellency in Council to Grant him such a portion of the Waste Land as in your opinion he merits, subject to such Regulations and limitations as your Excellency may deem proper.
