Biography

As of the publication of Ralph LeFevre's book in 1903, there were no baptism records found of Andre, but his brother Abraham was baptized in 1679 at Kingston, and brother Isaac was baptized in New Paltz on October 28, 1683. Andre is first mentioned as joining the church in New Paltz in 1700. (410, Le Fevre). LeFevre also says that there isn't a marriage record in either Kingston nor New Paltz for Andre and Cornelia (415, Le Fevre).

Andre kept his father's home in New Paltz. (433, Le Fevre)
Andries (LeFevre) Lefever was a son of a Huguenot emigrant (1540-1790).

Andries Lefever

Andries was the son of Simon Lefevre and Elisabeth Deyo, Huguenots émigrés from the Palatinate who arrived in New York in the mid-1660s. Andries' father was one of twelve original patentees of New Paltz in 1677 as was Elizabeth's father. While many may believe Andries parents married in New York following the establishment of the New Paltz settlement, there are no marriage records that verify this assumption. Still, as original New Paltz settlers, Andries family contributed to the New Paltz region for many generations.

While no baptism record has yet surfaced for Andries, he is noted as joining the Dutch Reformed Church in New Paltz 19 June 1700. The recorded transcript states "Andre Le Feve and Sammuel Baivyer were received at the Lord's table in the Paltz, by Mr. Bonrepos, Minister of the Word of God."[1]

As already noted, vital records for Andries' early life are scarce. This has lead past researchers to shape Andries' history around other available records. His birthplace is not known, but American researchers typically presume him to have been born in New Paltz, although this is unverified. His brother Abram's 1679 birthdate is often ascribed to Andries, resulting in an incorrect genealogy record; however, since Andries had to be of age to join the church on his own behalf, it is more likely he was born prior to his brothers whose births were as follows:

  • His brother, Abram, was baptized at Kingston Reformed Church 11 May 1679 to Simon Le Febure, Lysbeth Deojou: witnesses, Abram Haesbroeck, Anna Doejou.[2]
  • His brother, Isaac, was baptized 21 Oct 1683 in New Paltz to Lymon Lefebvre and Lysbet Doieie: witnesses, Isaac Duboys, Maria Hasbrouck.[1]
  • His brother, Jan, was baptized 28 Oct 1685 in New Paltz to Symon Lefebvre and Lysbet Doioie: witnesses, Pierre Doioie and Marie Doioie.[1]

Andries married Cornelia Blanjean[3] (Note of interest: Samuel Bevier, with whom Andries joined the New Paltz church in 1700, married Cornelia's sister, Magdelena. Their children, Matthew(s/o Andries) and Margriet(d/o Samuel) would marry and establish the Bloomingdale line of Le Fever's.)

Household

Andries raised his family on the original Lefevre patent, his childhood home in New Paltz, Ulster County, New York, which he inherited following the deaths of his father and uncle. The combined patentee lands were divided between Simon's children as the only heirs.[1]

On 20 May 1892, a New Paltz newspaper published a family memorandum authored by Peter Lefever, dated 1830: it concerned patentee land inherited by Simon Lefevre's children, including Andries, in 1703. In a dispute, Peter Cantain, maternal half brother of Andries, believed he should have been granted a division of the Lefevre tract along with his half-siblings, due to the fact that their maternal grandfather, Christian Deyo, patentee, had bequeathed their mother, Elisabeth Deyo, one-fifth of the Deyo patent years earlier. From this dispute arose a resolution which resulted in the 1728 formation of New Paltz's "Duzine" or Twelve Men governance system to protect heirs' rights of patentee descendants to original patentee lands. [5]

In 1728 Andries paid £40 in taxes.[1]

In 1731, Andries Le Fever served as an elected Elder of the New Paltz Reformed Church.[1]

Will

On 19 Apr 1738, Andries Lefever wrote his will, in which he left his primary estate and investment income to his "Dearly beloved" wife, Cornelae, dividing additional properties between their two sons and seven daughters. Children named in this will are eldest son Simon, Mattys, Elezebet (w/o Joneton Dubois), Sary, Mary, Catrine, Magdelen, Rachel and Margrete. The properties included horses, three bibles (2 French, 1 Dutch), pistols and holsters, farming utensils, sleighs, cows, hogs, orchards, tenements, clothing, money and several "negroe" slaves.

Slaves

Slaves listed in his will are:[6]

  • Charles*, "my negromen," to "my beloved wife."[7]
  • Judy, to daughter Elezebet, "for which she is to pay £12..."
  • Suesan, "Unto my Daughter Margrete."
  • Tom, along with
  • Seaser, "shall be sold and the Money devided..."
  • Jack and
  • James, to my two sons...to be equally devided, Share and Share alike.

Death

While there is no death record for Andries, he is mentioned as deceased in the will of his son Simon, written 06 Sept 1743.[6]

Namesake: Paternal uncle, Andre Lefevre, New Paltz patentee.

Research Notes

Surname Variations: Lefever(signed will); Le Fevere(son Simon's baptism); Le Fever(son Mattheus' baptism; 1730/1 Church Consistory Record); LeFevre(1728 New Paltz tax list); Lefeber/LeFeber/leFeber/le-Feeber(daughters baptisms); Le Feve(1700 church membership).

LNAB: French Spelling Conventions: Note that French conventions do not include mid-consonant capitalizations, so LNAB was probably never LeFevre, but more likely Le Fevre, Lefebvre, or Lefever. While his father's LNAB is reportedly Lefevre, Andries himself signed his will Lefever.

Andries' brother Jan (aka Jean/John) married Cornelia's sister Catheryne.

As far as I've found, regarding name variations: Hoe's Baptismal records transcripts for sons show "Le Fevere" and "Le Fever". Ralph Le Fevre's History of New Paltz, New York and Its Old Families (from 1678 to 1820) p. 110-111 mentions Andries "Lefever," quoting a 1703 record. Ulster County Probate Records (his will) show his name as "Lefever," which he signed as such. Descendants from one son in this line, Matthew, have retained Lefever, although an offshoot (5x grandson) changed to Lafever (Sylvan, son of Benson D. Lefever) for reasons noted in his profile. I recommend staying with Lefever and putting name variations in research notes. Other input welcome.

Lefevre-740 and LeFevre-252 appear to represent the same person because: Same father, same wife -- dates need a little work.

Should the mid-cap remain in the Last Name at Birth?? What do records show?

It looks to me that this baptism date belongs to brother Abraham. History of New Paltz says no baptism record found for Andries.
