Biography

Simon LeFevre Birth 11 SEP 1709 Kingston, Ulster, New York Death 7 SEP 1743 New Paltz, Ulster, New York [1](see early death notes) Simon's name appears in a 1738 list as a private in Captain Zacharias Hoffman's company. (*ref. needed.)

Simon (Le Fevere) Le Fever was a grandson of a Huguenot emigrant (1540-1790).

Simon was born in New Paltz, Ulster, New York, the eldest son of Andries Lefever and Cornelia (Blan Jean) Lefever. Baptised 11 Sept 1709 at the Reformed Dutch Church in Kingston to Andries Le Fevere and Cornelia Blansian: witnessed by Isaac Le Fevere and Magdalena Blansan.[2]

Simon grew up on the original New Paltz patent, home of his grandparents, New Paltz patentee Simeon Lefevre & Elisabeth Deyo which his father Andries had inherited. While his mother subsequently inherited the home and surrounding real estate following his father's death abt. 1738+, Simon received a division of the estate, his share including lots, orchards, tenements, farm implements, horses, and a family bible among other of his father's possessions[3] . He worked to sustain the family resources for his entire, albeit short, lifetime. He and his mother remained in the Lefevre home after his father's death. To this home, he brought a wife and began his family.

Simon married Petronella Hasbrouck.[4][5][6] Within five years, something happened to seriously threaten Simon's life, causing him to write a hasty will in 1743. He and Petronella had three young children by this time whom he named as inheritors: Andries, Sara, and Elsie.

Simon's Will

On 7 Sep 1743, while still a young man of 34y, Simon wrote a short document bequeathing his real estate and belongings, including "the negro "Charles," to his wife, Petronella, some items to be held in trust by her until their three small children reached ages 21. Remarkable for its brevity compared to his father's will, Simon left simple instructions for his children to be educated and his son receive his tools and farming implements when old enough. He made no stipulations as to who should retain the family home since his mother, Cornelia, was still living. Thus, the home passed to his son, Andries Lefever, through Cornelia, not Simon, who died before his mother as evidenced by his will.[3]

Slaves

The household had at least three slaves as extrapolated from wills:[3]

Simon inherited from his father "Jack and James, to my two sons...to be equally devided, Share and Share alike, " while his mother had inherited ownership of his "negroeman" Charles, whom Simon willed to his wife
Re: *Charles: He is likely the same man Andries Lefever bequeathed to Simon's mother, Cornelia, in his 1738 will, but when or why he was transferred into Simon's ownership is not known.

Early Death

Perhaps Simon's life ended shortly after identifying his beneficiaries in 1743 or he may have lingered for several years afterward--some think he may have contracted malaria or another debilitating illness that caused his early demise.[7] It is also possible he was injured in a farm accident. His will was not proven until 05 Nov 1748, for unknown reasons; regardless, he was under ae 40 when he died.[3]
